Fifth Maine Museum Built in 1888, the Fifth Maine is a history museum and historic site open to the public May-Oct. We hope you enjoy your visit!

The Fifth Maine Regiment Memorial Hall was built in 1888 as the "Headquarters" of the Fifth Regiment Maine Volunteer Infantry 1861-1864. For nearly sixty years the veterans and their families summered here, enjoying the cooling ocean breezes and magnificent view from the verandah of their beloved cottage. Under the stewardship of the Fifth Maine Regiment Community Association, the Hall is maintained as a Civil War and local history museum and a cultural center for our island community.

The Greely family lived in Portland and Cape Elizabeth, and also owed a cottage in the Trefethen neighborhood of Peaks Island. Fred E. Greely (1872-1955) served as a police office on Peaks for a time.

Thank you to the more than 100 people who lent a hand so far in 2026!

This season at the Fifth Maine was only possible because of our incredible team of volunteers, staff, and community. From flipping pancakes and watering flowers to painting the porch, snapping photos, giving tours, printing t-shirts, and so much more! Thank you to everyone listed below for generously giving your time to support the Fifth Maine. It really takes a village to keep our doors open.

In our collection we have accolades for Peaks Island native George E. Sterling (1894 - 1990). George had an amazing life and was a pioneer wireless radio operator beginning in 1908 when he was 14. He went on to found the Radio Intelligence Division (RID) for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He later served as the FCC Commissioner from 1948 - 1954.

In the words of President George Bush, Sterling was "a man of exceptional foresight and one of America's unsung heros of World War II...RID not only helped our soldiers to successfully engage the enemy but also gave us the ability to track our own disabled ships and planes, greatly aiding rescue efforts and savings countless lives."

George Sterling is buried in Pond Grove Cemetery on Peaks Island.

Join us at the Fifth Maine Museum this Saturday, September 26, from 6PM-7PM for an evening with author Martin Dobrow who will share on his soon-to-be-released book, Original City, Original Sin, which explores one of the great under-told stories in American history, namely the bloody civil rights campaign in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1963 and 1964.

This event is free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you there.
