Teruah (תְּרוּעָה) - a joyful sound, resounding, shout, war cry, jubilee

Artist Zach Ellis explores intimate landscapes through his photographic practice, a sacrifice of time and attention in order to commune with beauty. Each one of the forty-eight images found in the series Hereafter calls the viewer into an awareness of the sublime, a monument to be carried with us on the winding paths of life.

Join the artist on Friday evening, September 29 from 6-9pm at the Centennial Gallery in Peabody, Mass. for an engaging conversation and exploration of his new photographic work, Hereafter.

Arriving in LA and completing the project two months having passed by, Zach found himself deeply disillusioned, torn by the success of the series contrasted with the deepening vitriol and ensuing violence increasing across the very land country he had just traveled. Desperate to remember what is true, good and beautiful, he set out for fresh work in New Mexico, pausing along the way for what was to be a transformative three day repose in the desert. Completely alone and surrounded by the harsh realities of the desert landscape, it was there that the miraculous occurred. One small moment in which a profound sense of awe manifested itself; the stillness, solitude and wonder of the moment filling his camera’s frame. Yellow blossoms straining towards a beam of light amidst an unforgiving environment, this mysterious moment grabbed hold and wouldn’t let go. The hair went up on the back of his neck, a wave of emotion crashing over his body. The scene itself was simple enough, yet seemed utterly saturated with a transcendence that embraced and uplifted all at once. And then, just as suddenly as it had arrived, the feeling subsided, leaving behind a remnant to be carried on with curiosity and contemplation. It is from this very moment that the series Hereafter was inspired, an ongoing project photographed over three life-altering years through which Zach’s photographic style has transformed into a far more contemplative, meditative practice. This shift of attention and intention has richly renewed how Zach sees the world, now photographing those moments which before had gone largely unnoticed. Grounded by the profound peace and power of the desert, made aware of the transcendent beauty found in stillness and attention, each image presented in the series Hereafter holds within its boundaries the paradox of the both/and, a tension between the now and the yet to come. It is this tension that the artist continues to wrestle with through his image making, one which seems to hold ever increasing insight and the hope of reunion. In the hereafter we draw nearer to ourselves and the other, with wonder in abundance.

Show Description The photographs found within the series Hereafter are in many ways, a significant shift of focus for the artist’s work. For the first years of his practice, Zach Ellis trained his lens almost entirely on the human subject, photographing in a documentary style. Suddenly, while working in Manhattan’s lower east side, a global pandemic disrupted any and all current plans for the world as we knew it. Transfixed and deeply concerned by the disparity witnessed between national and local realities, Zach set out on an epic journey driving across the country from NYC to LA, photographing people across all demographics in an attempt to capture their unique stories as they weathered the storm.

Zach Ellis: A self-taught artist, Zach has had the unique opportunity to photograph with the United Nations, Smithsonian’s Institute, Terasem Foundation and many others. Raised in the Northwoods of Wisconsin amongst an adventurous and faithful family, Zach proved to be intuitive at an early age, discovering photography much later after years of diverse working experience, all of which have richly informed his artistic practice. Obsessed with learning and challenge, Zach’s work is sure to leave an expansive impression in the years to come.

Zach Ellis - ARTIST STATEMENT “SINCE I BEGAN TO MAKE PHOTOGRAPHS SO MUCH OF THE PROCESS HAS BEEN ABOUT LETTING GO AND LISTENING WELL. WITH EACH NEW DAY OF PICTURE-MAKING I AM DISCOVERING WHAT IS ALREADY FLOATING AROUND IN MY UNCONSCIOUS, THE LENS HELPING BRING TO HIGHER RESOLUTION THAT WHICH IS ALREADY DIRECTING MY GAZE. THROUGH THIS PRACTICE I AM LEARNING TO PAY BETTER ATTENTION TO WHAT I AM PAYING ATTENTION TO. MY WORK IS, AT ITS ESSENCE, ABOUT THE BOTH/AND, CONFRONTING AND EMBRACING CONUNDRUMS AND CONTRADICTIONS IN THE WORLD AND IN MYSELF. WITH A CAMERA IN HAND ALL THINGS BECOME REFLECTIVE SURFACE, A MIRROR TO THE SOUL SHINING BACK WHAT I HOPE AGAINST HOPE TO SEE MORE CLEARLY.” - Zach - - - Zach Ellis has been working through the medium of photography for six years.
