Cape Verde is an archipelago nation 400 miles off the west coast of Africa that was previously a Portuguese colony. Immigrants from this culturally rich locale first came to the United States in the 19th century as whalers and cranberry pickers, settling in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Today, there are about 250,000 people of Cape Verdean descent in southern New England. Our museum, a 501(c)3 f

ounded in 2000 with an East Providence location that opened in 2005, celebrates the history of the islands and the communities of those hardworking people who made the United States their home. We accomplish this through displays of maps, artifacts, archeological discoveries, photographs, artwork and many other types of items, as well as with our current library, the largest of any Cape Verdean collection in the U.S., which includes rare books, family mementos and historical documents that many visitors find engaging. Our goal is to elevate this heritage and provide role models for the next generation. Along the way, our doors have always been open to anyone else interested in learning the fascinating stories of Cape Verdeans.

Our 51st independence celebrations are almost here. July 5th we will be in the Cultural Tent at India Point Park (Fox Point Providence, RI) as we do yearly. This year in honor of the USA 250th Anniversary we will be holding an event July 25th at India Point Park in collaboration with RI Cape Verdean Heritage to celebrate the Cape Verdean American presence and contributions to the 250 years of the USA.

Mark your calandars, this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday we have a full weekend of events at your Cape Verdean Museum. Friday we have a watch party for the third FIFA Game of the Blue Sharks, Saturday, AnnMarie & Mateo brings the Catchupa PreApprovals and Sunday if you wanted to know more about the Independence struggle in Guinea-Bissau and the important role Cuba played then this book presentation is a must. All of these events are free and there will be finger foods and drinks but donations are always welcomed.

CAPE VERDEAN MUSEUM POP-UP EXHIBIT/NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM OF CABO VERDE.
The Cape Verdean Museum is presenting a pop-up exhibit honoring the National Soccer team of Cabo Verde, the Blue Sharks.
As part of the exhibition the museum is providing a commemorative book where you can sign in and express your congratulations to the team.
Come to the museum, sign the book and show the Blue Sharks your Cape Verdean pride.
At the end of the tournament, the book will be presented to Coach Bubista and the esteemed players.

June Arrivals in the Port of Providence.

In June 1921, two ships arrived in Providence from the island of São Vicente, carrying 170 passengers in total. The Senator arrived on June 3d with 58 passengers, and the Greyhound followed on June 15 with 112 passengers.

On June 1, 1928, the John R. Manta arrived at the Port of Providence on its first trip of five from Brava, completing the voyage in 49 days. The ship always reached Providence in June. Arriving on June 5, 1929, June 7, 1932, June 9, 1933, and June 19, 1934. In total, the Manta brought 227 passengers to Rhode Island.
