This picture shows Jose Barrera (better known as Mexican Joe) and his wife, Effie Barrera. The couple married in 1905, and Effie became a trick rider in the show. After the Wild West Show, the couple worked on the ranch with Jose serving as ranch foreman and Effie helping with day-to-day operations.

🚨 ATTENTION VISITORS 🚨

If you visit the Pawnee Bill Ranch and Museum and drive through the pasture, PLEASE stay on the paved roads. We are in calving season, and babies hide in the grass. Driving off the road puts these calves in danger. If the bison are blocking the road, please be patient. They will eventually move.

The log cabin was built in 1910 and was a symbol of Americana, hearkening back to the time of Abraham Lincoln. This log cabin is built out of cedar logs gathered in the area along the Black Bear Creek with an outdoor summer kitchen located on the southwest corner and an interior stone fireplace.

While Pawnee Bill would tell visitors that this was the log cabin that he lived in when he was first starting the ranch, it was not. This cabin was used as a movie prop, educational tool, and as a clubhouse. Pawnee Bill would treat friends and associates from the East to a “real western experience.” According to oral histories, he would send cowboys from the ranch to “kidnap” his guests from the incoming trains and hold them in the log cabin as part of that western experience.

After a storied career in the Wild West Show, May Lillie took on a new role as “Queen of the Buffalo Ranch” in her retirement. As an equal partner in the property with her husband, one of May’s greatest joys was “bossing around the outfit.” She had a close relationship with the cowboys that worked the ranch, referring to them as “her boys.” At the time, May Lillie was renowned as the only woman in the world to run a bison ranch.
