September is SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH. With a National Day of June 19th. Join us in our β€œBE AWARE CAMPAIGN” as we share facts & start conversations about Sickle Cell all month to spread AWARENESS of SICKLE CELL AMEMIA !!! Here’s 5 Facts to start the month off.

1. Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition that is present at birth. It is inherited when a child
receives two sickle cell genes – one from EACH parent.
2. Sickle cell disease can occur in any race or ethnic group. This genetic condition has long been associated with people of African descent, however it can be found in many races and ethnic groups, including Middle Eastern, Latino, Asian, Mediterranean decent, and even Caucasian.
3. People with sickle cell trait cannot develop sickle cell disease.
4.Every baby is tested for sickle cell disease in the United States. This is part of the newborn screen performed shortly after birth. Identifying children with sickle cell disease as an infant can prevent serious complications.
5. There are different types of sickle cell disease which vary in severity. Hemoglobin SS (the most type) and sickle beta thalassemia zero are most severe followed by hemoglobin SC and sickle beta thalassemia plus.
