Welcome to “Feel Good Friday!”

Each week we’ll be shining a light on local businesses and nonprofits making a positive difference to Patagonia, AZ and the surrounding communities. This is our way of sharing their stories and celebrating greatness so close to home!

The Patagonia Trading Post’s Local Non-Profit of the Week is:

Arizona Game and Fish Department

Wildlife needs water. That's why we need you.

Send Water to Wildlife

Arizona is in a cycle of long-term drought. For our wildlife, this means less drinking water and a bigger fight for survival, especially during the dangerously hot and dry summer months.

As part of our mission to conserve and protect wildlife, the Arizona Game and Fish Department maintains 3,000 wildlife waters, including manmade catchments, built in locations all around the state. These stations provide life-saving hydration for all manner of wildlife all year long, from scurrying chipmunks to thirsty eagles to bugling elk.

It’s not an easy task. It costs more than $1 million annually for the Arizona Game and Fish Department and our partners to deliver water to these sites every year, with some of the most remote areas requiring helicopters to reach them. Since AZGFD does not receive any general fund tax dollars, we rely on conservation heroes like you to help fund costs such as vehicle maintenance, new trailers, and catchment repairs and upkeep.

No matter the challenges, it’s worth it to give our wildlife a fighting chance at survival.

Gem Spotlight: Day 3 (of 3)

Azurite and Malachite Combo | Chrysocolla | Agate, Tiger’s Eye, Amethyst Stones

Not all treasures are hidden. Some are sitting right here on our shelves.

We're wrapping up our gem spotlight with some truly colorful treasures. Our azurite and malachite specimens showcase a stunning blend of deep cobalt blues and rich greens, creating natural patterns that look almost painted by hand. We've also added beautiful chrysocolla stones in shades of turquoise, teal, and jade that capture the colors of desert skies and hidden springs. To round things out, you'll find polished agate, tiger's eye, and amethyst hearts, each with its own unique colors, bands, and character.

From bold mineral specimens to smooth pocket stones, these gems are a wonderful reminder that some of nature's most beautiful artwork is found beneath our feet.

Tucson Gem & Mineral Society

This week's Feel Good Friday shines a light on the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society, a nonprofit organization that has been inspiring curiosity about the natural world since 1946. Through educational programs, scholarships, field trips, lectures, and community outreach, they help people of all ages discover the fascinating stories hidden within rocks, minerals, fossils, and gemstones.

Many people know them as the organization behind the world-famous Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, but their impact goes far beyond the annual event. Their volunteers work year-round to promote earth science education, support young rockhounds, and encourage a deeper appreciation for the incredible geological treasures found right here in Arizona and around the world.

We're grateful for organizations like the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society that help preserve knowledge, spark curiosity, and connect people with the beauty and wonder of the earth beneath our feet.

Thank you, Tucson Gem & Mineral Society, for helping generations discover that every stone has a story.

Gem Spotlight: Day 2 (of 3)

Tiger’s Eye | Iron Pyrite (Fool’s Gold) | Celestite

Some gems sparkle. Some shimmer. Some look like they belong in a treasure chest.

Today's spotlight features three favorites that couldn't be more different from one another. Tiger's Eye glows with rich golden bands and a silky shimmer that seems to move as the stone catches the light. Iron Pyrite, often called "Fool's Gold," dazzles with its metallic luster and naturally formed geometric crystals. Celestite offers a completely different beauty, with delicate sky-blue crystals that seem almost otherworldly.

Whether you're drawn to bold flashes of gold, brilliant metallic sparkle, or soft crystal blues, these remarkable gems are a reminder that nature never runs out of ways to amaze us.
