🔎📜 THE GREAT MARIE JOSEPHINE LaPOINTE “MAMA” MYSTERY

We have a LaPointe family mystery for you, and the more records we find, the more interesting it gets!

Joseph Simon de LaPointe had three daughters we’ve been researching: Élisabeth, Jeanne, and Marie Josephine (Married Hugo Krebs).

The question: Who was Marie Josephine’s mother, Joseph’s first wife, Marie Foucaud (Foucault/Foucaud), or his second wife, Catherine Doucin?

We can document two sisters.

💗 Élisabeth’s 1724 marriage record names Marie Foucaud as her mother and says Élisabeth was born in La Rochelle, France.

💗 Jeanne’s 1747 marriage record ALSO names Marie Foucaud as her mother, and identifies Catherine Doucin as her stepmother.

Then we get to Marie Josephine. 👀

Joseph married Catherine Doucin in 1729, and that record mentions a little daughter, about two years old, who was acknowledged/legitimized in connection with the marriage.

That places this mystery child’s birth around 1727.

Could she be Marie Josephine?

We think she very well may be, but we can’t prove it.

We also can’t rule out Marie Foucaud. She wasn’t a wife Joseph left behind in France. She was here on the Gulf Coast with him in several census records. And when Marie Josephine’s first son was baptized in 1742, the record states that Marie Josephine herself was born on the Gulf Coast.

But then we have another question...

What if the two-year-old in the 1729 record ISN’T Marie Josephine?

WHO IS SHE?! 👀

Then Joseph had ANOTHER little daughter, born around 1727, whom we haven’t accounted for.

Did she die young? Is there a baptism or burial we haven’t found? Or was that little girl Marie Josephine all along?

🔎 Was she the mysterious two-year-old?

Somewhere, one 300-year-old record may solve BOTH.

🌊 21 YEARS AGO TODAY: HURRICANE KATRINA

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina forever changed communities across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The La Pointe-Krebs House had already stood on the Pascagoula waterfront for nearly 250 years.

It had survived generations of Gulf Coast storms, changing shorelines, wars, families coming and going, and centuries of history.

Then came Katrina.

The storm surge rose approximately 42 inches inside the museum building, and the historic La Pointe-Krebs House itself suffered significant damage.

But the house survived.

And surviving the storm was only part of the story.

In the years that followed, preservationists, historians, architects, community supporters and organizations worked to repair and restore this remarkable piece of Gulf Coast history. That work required carefully studying the historic structure and finding ways to preserve as much of it as authentically as possible.

Today, visitors don't simply read about that preservation work, you can see it.

You can walk through the historic house, examine its centuries-old construction, and visit our museum exhibits to learn how preservation, conservation and restoration helped ensure that the La Pointe-Krebs House remained standing after Katrina.

There is something especially meaningful about that on an anniversary like today.

This house has stood since 1757.

But historic places don't survive for nearly 270 years simply because they are old or because they are strong.

They survive because, generation after generation, people decide they are worth saving. ❤️

Today we remember all that our Gulf Coast lost on August 29, 2005, and we remain incredibly grateful for everyone who helped make sure this small but extraordinary piece of its history wasn't among those losses.

❤️ THANK YOU to everyone who joined us yesterday for our first LaPointe-Krebs Family History Day!

We met cousins, shared records, discovered new leads and learned so much about how we can continue growing our LaPointe-Krebs Family History Collection. We can't wait to do it again September 22!

But you don't have to wait until then to come see us. 🏛️

If yesterday was about the PEOPLE who made this history, today come see the PLACE where so much of that history lives.

Our museum tells the story of Pascagoula and the Gulf Coast across these walls — and then you get to step inside the La Pointe-Krebs House itself, the oldest scientifically confirmed structure still standing in Mississippi.

The family archives we're building will help us tell the stories of the people who lived here. The house they left behind is a remarkable reminder of just how enduring their place in our Gulf Coast story has been.

📜 WHAT A DAY SO FAR!!

We're only halfway through our first LaPointe-Krebs Family History Day, and we have already had such a FANTASTIC turnout! ❤️

We've met cousins, made connections, gotten leads on new records to track down, shared some of the incredible documents we've already uncovered AND welcomed new members into the La Pointe-Krebs Heritage Society!

Exactly what we hoped this day would be. 🥰

And we're not finished yet!

We'll be here researching, sharing stories, looking through records and talking family history until 5 PM today, so there is still plenty of time to swing by and see what we've been working on!

📜 CAN YOU READ FRENCH or LATIN? WE MAY NEED YOUR HELP!

Sometimes the BEST part of a historical record isn't in the names and dates. It's in the details.

Take the record pictured here.

This is the 1675 baptismal record of Marguerite Françoise Simon, daughter of Hubert Simon dit LaPointe and Marie Vié, and older sister of Joseph Simon de LaPointe.

The index gives us the basics: Marguerite was born November 18, 1675 and baptized the following day.

But translate the original record and we learn something more.

Baby Marguerite was in danger of death. The situation was serious enough that the midwife baptized her immediately, before the formal baptismal rites could be performed at church.

She survived. ❤️

Suddenly we're not looking at dates on a family tree. We're seeing a very real moment in the lives of a family nearly 350 years ago.

And THAT is where we could use some help!

As we build the LaPointe-Krebs Family History Collection, we're finding incredible original French records: baptisms, marriages, court cases, contracts, inventories and more. Some run page after page, including one court record nearly 30 pages long!

Our translation resources work well for individual records, but these long, handwritten documents are another story. And we don't just want the names and dates. We want to know what they SAY.

Who was arguing with whom? What did they own? What happened in court? Who were their neighbors? What were they buying, selling, building or fighting over?

🇫🇷 Do you read French? Even better, can you work with French handwriting from the 1600s and 1700s? Or Latin?

We would LOVE to hear from you! We can provide digital copies and hope to find a few people interested in helping us translate these records in their entirety.

✒️ SIGNATURE SATURDAY: HUBERT SIMON dit LaPointe

Some ancestors leave us one signature if we're lucky.
Hubert Simon left us...quite a few!

And there is a reason for that.

Hubert Simon was the father of Joseph Simon de LaPointe, whose descendants would eventually become part of the story of the La Pointe-Krebs House here in Pascagoula.

Hubert lived in 17th-century New France, and while researching his life, we have discovered something especially fun: the man had PAPERWORK. Court appearances. Lawsuits. Contracts. Inventories. Agreements. Legal disputes.

And scattered throughout those surviving records, again and again, is his signature:

These aren't simply genealogy records they tell us about property and possessions. Money owed. Arguments and agreements. Neighbors and business dealings. They give us names of people who stood in the same room together hundreds of years ago and sometimes even preserve their signatures at the bottom of the page.

This Tuesday, August 25, we're beginning something new at the La Pointe-Krebs House & Museum. We'll be pulling out the records we've been collecting, organizing and researching as we work to build our growing LaPointe-Krebs Family History Collection.

🏛️ Our little house made Hometown History! ❤️

We were so excited to see WXXV 25 Hometown History feature on the La Pointe-Krebs House today!

There are almost 270 years of history wrapped up in this one little building, and SO many stories that we are still researching, discovering and piecing together.

One of the things we talked about during Megan's visit was just how remarkable it is that the house is still here at all.

Generation after generation, someone had to look at this old building and decide, "Let's hold onto it a little bit longer."

And because they did, we get to walk through it today.

We get to study the materials used to build it. We get to uncover the stories of the people who lived and worked here. Descendants can stand on the same ground their ancestors walked generations ago. And our children get something increasingly rare, the opportunity to actually step inside history instead of only reading about it.

Now it's our generation's turn to keep telling its stories, learning from them, and making sure there's something left for the generations that come after us. ❤️
