If U.S. roads were a war zone, they would be the most dangerous battlefield the American military has ever encountered.

What would you change about Pasadena?

"Where is the line drawn between hostile architecture that seeks to favor one class of people over another, and practical urban planning that aims to keep all people safe?"

I'll go first: I come from Moscow and am here by means of the Jewish Federation and the United States refugee policy for Russian Jews. I am in LA by way of Austria, Italy, Framingham, Newton, Chicago, Paris, Potsdam, Berlin, Atlanta, and NYC. Currently I am in Pasadena at Zephyr Cafe And Hookah which is incidentally amazing.
As for where I am going... it's not clear. LA's been good to me, but I do feel inherently nomadic.

Making Museums Moral Again

"My sense is that such a tactic could encourage viewer “engagement,” to invoke a term that buzzes around the fraught subject of audience-building. It could wake people up; compel them to stop, look and read when they might have passed by; and prompt them to see that art isn’t just about objects — it’s about ideas, histories and ethical philosophies that they may have a stake in, and an opinion about. It seems to me that one point of museum programming is to get people to think, as opposed to endlessly snapping selfies."

The impact of corporations on the art world has divested museums of their roles as explainers of history and providers of life lessons. Is it too late to change that?

Is it massively simplifying our project to say that at the heart of it is that we just want to encourage people to SPEAK UP and know that they have opinions?

On Wednesday evenings, I have orchestra class three miles from my house. I’m only 11, so I have two ways to get there. If my Mom drives me, at that time of day, in traffic, it takes 35 minutes. If I ride my bike, it takes 15 minutes. On my ride to orchestra I see so much more than I do in…

What does conflict mean to you?

03/05/2016

This is one of my favorites about what conflict means: "You feel like you should embrace it because it is supposed to be so fruitful, but secretly deep down inside, it’s just wearisome, and you just want to lay in bed and eat ice cream."

You want conflict? I'll give you conflict.
This is silly, but very real way to me, being an imported east coaster. Still fascinated with the cactus. Every time I see a cactus, I have to touch it. This has included in the past: me putting a cactus in my friend's sweater's pocket (which I was wearing at the time, but he got to deal with the needles); me brazenly stroking what I thought was a denuded cactus (which of course turned out not to be.)

So, my conflict is cactuses. I feel compelled to touch and caress them, though I know they will bring me, inevitably, pain and trouble. It was a long time cleaning out that sweater pocket...
