MOUNTAIN ASH
My Backyard 🍂

Day seven of my fall photo series!

Sometimes, you don’t have to travel far to find beauty. These two mountain ash trees in my backyard have always been a favorite of mine. From their vibrant neon-green leaves in spring to brilliant orange berries in late summer that provide food for migrating birds, they offer something special in every season. And then comes fall, with its beautiful mix of golden yellow and fiery orange!

Sadly, after several drought-filled summers, I’m losing one of these two trees to disease. Knowing that, I’ve found myself a little obsessed with documenting them in all their seasonal glory while I still can.

There’s something bittersweet about photographing a familiar part of your landscape, knowing it may not be there forever. Sometimes, those are the moments worth capturing most.

Solo Birch Tree, Surrounded by Tamaracks 🍂

Day six of my fall photo series!

Along the wetlands off County Road 18, a lone birch stands among the golden tamaracks. I’ve revisited this spot over the years, watching the seasons change and the landscape evolve. I remember when this little birch was just a sapling, and it brings me joy to see it thriving among the surrounding vegetation.

There’s something special about returning to a familiar place and witnessing the quiet passage of time. This little birch has found its place in the landscape, adding its own character to the brilliant gold of autumn.

Oak Tree in Burnt Umber 🍂

Day five of my fall photo series!

Oak trees are among my favorites, partly because they’re often one of the last trees to reveal their autumn colors. And when they do, what a show they put on!

The rich palette of orange, red, and burnt umber is pure autumn magic. Burnt umber, with its deep, earthy blend of golden-orange and rustic brown, captures the warmth and richness of the season beautifully.

Sometimes, the best colors are worth waiting for!

Reflection on Tamaracks 🍂
Fishhook Lake

Day four of my fall photo series!

On Monday, I stopped at the tamaracks just off County Road 18, where the evening light seemed to give these trees its own spotlight, highlighting the brilliant gold and rich rust tones of its autumn needles. The water perfectly reflecting the light.

I’ve photographed this scene before, but this time I wanted to use my new Nikon Z8 to capture the intricate textures and details that make these trees so beautiful. Sometimes, revisiting a familiar scene with a fresh perspective is all it takes to see something new.

Tamaracks, Maple, Birch and Pine, OH MY!!
Itasca State Park through the lens
Day three of my fall photo series takes us to Itasca State Park!

I captured this view of Mary Lake with my telephoto lens a few weeks ago. You’ll find this beautiful scene as you enter the park near the visitor station, looking across the lake toward a stunning mix of autumn colors.

This view always gets me excited about the colors, textures, and surprises waiting to be discovered as I drive, hike, and photograph my way through the park. From fiery reds and brilliant oranges to vibrant greens, yellows, and golden tamaracks, Itasca is a feast for the eyes this time of year!

As I Exit Blackbird Drive
Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
This photograph was taken a few weeks ago as I was exiting Blackbird Drive. I was drawn to the lush green grasses and cattails turning golden brown against the deep blue evening sky. A lone pine reflects in the pond, while a brilliant orange-red tree reminds us that it’s time for the season to transition.

There’s something special about these quiet moments when summer gives way to fall.

This week as we round out the other web sites you can find our artist, our own Brita Sailer can be found on our Studio 176 web site, but Brita has a long history with art, teaching and serving the Great State of Minnesota as a representative. And if you need to know anything about recylcling...she's your "go to."

A little more here.

Green, Gold & Ochre: A Walk Through the Family Acreage 🍂

The colors of fall are here! This week, I’ll be sharing a new fall photograph each day as part of my seven-day series for Studio 176.

I haven’t been out shooting as much as I’d like lately, so I thought this challenge might force me out to shoot one of my favorite seasons. A photo a day fresh from the camera roll. There’s so much beauty in the changing colors and quiet moments of the season!

I hope you enjoy this little journey through fall with me.

Did you know that several of our artists also have web sites and write about their work?

Sometimes it's fun to see how they create, what's behind the work they do and what they share.

Here's Laura Grisamore's web site where some really interesting tidbits about Minnesota can be found on the Project Unincorporated 2025 page.

Most definitely check out the "gallery page" on Elizabeth Rockstad's page.
