Today is another entry from Emily Murrell Jarnigan’s journal from her stay at Hunter’s Home in 1850. Emily was enjoying something we are all enjoying this time of year – strawberries!

(May 17th)…”A treat from Wm. Ross’s both for dinner & tea, a nice bowl of Strawberry’s and good rich cream.”

Emily Murrell Jarnigan, George Murrell’s niece, visited Hunter’s Home in 1850. She recorded daily life at Hunter’s Home in a journal she kept while visiting George and Minerva. This is her entry for June 1, 1850, as she wrote it.

June 1st Uncle George & myself have just returned from a ride. We went to the top of “Bald Hill” where we had a most magnificent view of the country in every direction for miles & miles. Oh! It was too grand a sight, I have a shell obtained on the hill as a remembrance of my first visit there. A*o at the branch at the foot of the hill I got a sprig from a singular shrub, which I have pressed for my “Herbarium,” winding around the branch toward home, we road through a complete flower garden.

Our sheep can't wait for shearing day tomorrow!

There is talk of possible rain tomorrow, but we are still planning on shearing. The event will run from 10-3 with historical cooking going on, wool processing and house tours. Regular admission fees apply.

We hope to see you tomorrow.
