Myth (Busting) Monday

"They didn't have closets in houses at this time because they were taxed."
This statement is not actually correct. Closets have been in homes since the colonial era and there is no evidence of a tax ever being levied on them at any time in history. Closets were common between fireplaces or under stairs to make use of awkward spaces. Hunter's Home in fact boasts seven closets! Below is just one of our closets that uses the small space on the side of the fireplace.

Happy Father's Day!

George Murrell, the builder of Hunter's Home, was the father of six children with his second wife Amanda. They were Harding, George, Frances, Rosanna, John and Lewis. In addition, he took in and raised Joshua and Jennie, two of his first wife Minerva's cousins.

What is it Wednesday

This is a pen wipe. A pen wipe was made from small bits of fabric and used to clear the ink from pen nibs after writing. Often, these were highly ornamental with patterns published in domestic magazines of the time. Our pen wipe was made from one of these patterns by the talented Marna Davis.

On April 15th a strong storm came through Park Hill and knocked down several trees at Hunter's Home. Among them was an oak tree that had been on the property for many years. It can be seen in the picture below, just to the left of the barn. While it is unfortunate that the tree was lost, it will provide us with many years of firewood now, for which we are grateful.

In honor of Flag Day tomorrow, we present to you the U.S. flag from 1845, the year Hunter's Home was completed. The 1845 flag had 27 stars due to Florida becoming a state on March 3rd of that year. This flag flew for one year until it was replaced in 1846 with the 28-star flag when Iowa joined the union on December 28, 1846.
