Come hear stories of preserving Park City’s iconic Silver King Coalition mine headframe building in a free talk on Wednesday, May 13, at 5 p.m. in the Jim Santy auditorium at Park City Library, presented by the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History.
Local expert, career geologist, and Silver King preservation project manager Brian Buck will share the challenges and successes, and plenty of photos from before, during, and after the 4-year restoration process of the 100-year old building..
The newly restored building was awarded the 2026 Cindy Matsumoto Award for Historic Preservation by Park City’s Historic Preservation Board and the 2026 Community Stewardship Award for Rehabilitation and Restoration from Preservation Utah.
This 12,400-square-foot industrial landmark had been vacant since 1953 and was listed among Preservation Utah's 2024 Most Endangered Sites for risk of structural failure. Completed in October 2025, the project stabilized the 1,325-foot-deep mine shaft, removed more than 1,639 broken windows, and rebuilt the snow-damaged roof using the original corrugated metal panels with their historic patina.
The building is now the centerpiece of the Silver King Coalition Mine National Historic District, designated in December 2024. The building will anchor the Park City Historic Mine Route, launching in September 2026.
The Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History is an all-volunteer committee of the Park City Historical Society & Museum.
