Stirling City lumber camp crew, 1915🪵🪓

This 1915 photo shows a Diamond Match lumber crew at a camp east of Stirling City. More than 100 years later, every person pictured here would be well over 100 years old today.

Their lives were not easy. Crews like this worked long days in rough mountain conditions, cutting and moving timber with the tools, roads, and equipment they had at the time. It was hard, dangerous work, but it helped shape the communities and industries that grew across Butte County.

Did anyone in your family work for Diamond Match or in the lumber camps around Stirling City? We’d love to hear your stories in the comments.

A look back at the Nimshew School 🏫

These photos show the Nimshew School through the years, with class portraits from around 1887 and 1890, along with a later view of the school around 1922.

It’s pretty incredible to think that everyone pictured here would all be well over 100 years old today. These photos give us a small window into what school life looked like for children growing up in the Nimshew area more than a century ago.

Do you or your family have any memories connected to the Nimshew School? Did anyone in your family attend school here? We’d love to hear your stories in the comments.

Did you know Paradise once had its own chinchilla fur trade?

In the mid-1900s, chinchilla farming was a thriving industry in California, and Paradise had at least two chinchilla farms. One local farm reportedly had more than 700 chinchillas at one time.

Chinchillas were valued for their thick, plush fur, which was used to make coats and accessories. Their pelts were often sold in bulk at auction houses in places like New York or Seattle, and it could take anywhere from 150 to 300 pelts to make just one chinchilla fur coat.

It’s a lesser-known piece of Paradise history, but one that shows how many different industries have been part of life on the Ridge over the years.

Sneak peek at a piece of our upcoming Black Bart exhibit 👀

Black Bart, whose real name was Charles E. Boles, became one of California’s most famous stagecoach robbers during the 1870s and 1880s. Known as the “gentleman bandit,” he was remembered for his polite manner, his Wells Fargo stagecoach robberies across Northern California, and the poems he left behind after a couple of his holdups.

Stay tuned for more exhibit sneak peeks as we continue bringing this story to life!
