We’re excited to announce our exhibition as part of 2027 ! The Foster Museum: Revisiting John Muir’s High Sierra
In 1986, British watercolorist Tony Foster painted his third wilderness Journey as he hiked the entire 215 miles of the iconic John Muir Trail in the Sierra Nevada. Foster’s Journey-based art practice explores themes of nature and environmental stewardship and involves painting en plein air in the world’s wild places. His detailed watercolors are complemented by diary notes and found objects. This exhibition reunites artworks presented in the first exhibition of John Muir’s High Sierra at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in 1989 and celebrates the artist's ties to Northern California which led to a museum dedicated to his art in Palo Alto.
From March 10-June 10, 2027 Further Triennial will celebrate Northern California’s creative and cultural life, bringing together more than 80 arts organizations across the Greater Bay Area. The Foster Museum is thrilled to participate in the first edition, Around Here. We look forward to celebrating Northern California’s vibrant art historical past and present with you!
