This is a photograph of the old Collector's Office, which was located on Canal Street. Tolls were collected here, day and night, before travel on the Erie Canal became free. The building was torn down in 1929 after becoming abandoned and dilapidated.

Aaron Platt Seeley was born on November 8, 1832, in Weston, Connecticut. He eventually made his way here to Palmyra and worked as a "master carriage maker" by trade.

He enlisted in the Civil War at 29 and became Captain of Company A, 111th NY Infantry. Captain Seeley experienced several injuries during his service that led to his discharge for disability in August 1864. However, he later re-enlisted in the 194th NY Infantry and mustered out with the regiment on May 3, 1865.

After the war, Seeley returned to Palmyra and started a family with his wife, Sophia. He also worked numerous different jobs, including as Superintendent of Canals and Assistant US Assessor.

Who was Ezra Ballou Sutton?
Ezra Sutton was Palmyra's early baseball star. He was born September 17, 1849. He became one of the outstanding third basemen of baseball's earliest professional era. He played amateur baseball in Rochester in 1869. His career stretched from 1871 through 1888, an extraordinary length for that time. Baseball-Reference credits him with 1574 hits, 994 runs, 25 home runs, and a .294 batting average.
Unfortunately, his later life became very difficult. He developed a serious neurological condition and eventually became unable to go out. His wife Susan was killed after a lamp exploded, leaving Sutton in extremely difficult circumstances. His old baseball friends rallied around him and helped organize financial support and arranged for Sutton to receive care close to former teammates in Massachusetts. Sutton eventually moved to a private hospital where he died on June 20, 1907, at the age of 57, and then he came home to Palmyra one final time. He can be found at his final resting place in Palmyra Village Cemetery.

Fred V. Cleveland came to Palmyra c. 1870 and purchased this property from Mr. Knowles. Cleveland then embarked in the grocery business. His store would have been located on Canal Street, and his residence on Railroad Avenue.
