It's really a fighter after all! 🤪

The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, which is the first operational stealth aircraft in the world, was also one of the most misunderstood.

The main point of contention was it's 'F' series designation which is reserved for Fighter aircraft. Given it's actual combat role, not to mention it's severe performance restrictions due to it's unaerodynamic faceted airframe design and non-afterburning engines which further reduced it's flight performance, the aircraft could hardly be called a 'Fighter' which has traditionally implied a fast and highly manueverable aircraft designed to fight other similarly high performance aircraft, and more properly be designated as the A-117 as the aircraft is in fact more of an attack aircraft or light bomber.

There is a famous story about how the 'F-117' designation came about. The aircraft was so unstable and difficult to fly thanks to it's unconventional design, that it needed a highly skilled pilot with similar experience in hard to handle aircraft to fly it. Unfortunately, so the story goes, most of such pilots are fighter jocks used to flying high performance fighter jets and are unwilling to trade down to fly a slow 'mud mover'. Hence, to entice potential F-117 Nighthawk pilot candidates, the aircraft was described as a new superlative and top secret advanced fighter. This also had the additional benefit of likewise fooling foreign spies into believing that the USAF has a new fighter. In so many words, the designation was all a bluff.

However, it's long known that the aircraft does have the ability to carry Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM). For years, it was thought that the capability was more for the aircraft's self-defense and that the F-117 has very limited ability to engage other airborne targets due to it lacking a radar.

It has been recently revealed that the F-117 Nighthawk had a clandestine capability to engage enemy Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft using heat seeking missiles. It was intended that the aircraft's stealth capability would allow it to sneak up on and shoot down AEW&C aircraft without being detected by the powerful surveillance radars typically carried by such aircraft in a kind of assassin's mace type attack. This capability, in a roundabout way, does ultimately justify the aircraft's 'F' for 'Fighter' designation. 😉 ~Clorox.

Ben Rich, who was Kelly Johnson‘s right-hand man, took over Kelly’s position at Skunk Works after his retirement. Kelly was still coming into the office as an advisor and told Ben that his F117 would not fly. This was very hard on Ben but he still kept it up he wanted to make the first stealth bomber. The F1 17. It’s a Bomber that is so stealthy the enemy could not see it coming. It proved it worth during the Gulf war. The F-117 achieved its targets without being shot down. Kelly and Ben made a quarter bet. This was one quarter Ben Rich was really happy to take from his former boss. As Kelly was sure that the F1-17 wouldn’t fly. As you can see in this picture, the F117 certainly did fly!! You can read more about this in the book Skunk works by Ben Rich

Join us for the program "Flying the “Black Jet”-An F-117 Nighthawk Pilot’s Story" on Saturday, March 26th from 1 PM to 2 PM. Presenter: Thad Darger.

“I remember my last mission very well, as a matter of fact. . .. I was given a target, specific to the F-117 community, we call it a “non-collateral damage target,” where we couldn’t accept anything besides the target itself being destroyed, and it was extremely bad weather on the night that I went to that target. So, there was a real decision that I had to make in my mind ……it was probably as nervous as I’ve ever been in my life….” Need we say more?

At one point in time, Lockheed's F-117 Nighthawks were the most secret military aircraft ever built. Aside from the government and people who were building it, not a soul knew about them. Their stealth technology was so advanced that from its genesis in 1975,
