Clementine Hunter changed American art history without ever receiving formal training or learning to read and write.

For decades, she worked picking cotton at Melrose Plantation in Louisiana. In her 50s, she discovered a new passion after finding discarded brushes and paint left behind by an artist visiting the plantation. With no traditional canvas, she painted her first artwork on an old window shade.

What began as a personal expression became a remarkable artistic legacy. Hunter created more than 7,000 paintings, capturing plantation life, family, faith, and everyday moments from her own experiences. She sold her early works for just 25 cents, later seeing her paintings displayed in museums and valued at thousands of dollars.

Her artwork eventually reached institutions like the Smithsonian, and her painting “Early Funeral” sold at auction for $85,400. The Museum of American Folk Art recognized her as one of the most celebrated Southern contemporary painters.

Clementine never painted for fame or fortune. She painted because she loved it. Her story showed that creativity can come from anywhere, and a person’s voice can leave a mark on history no matter where they begin.
