As the main street project continues this summer and traffic is stalled throughout the downtown area, I was reminded that back in the history of Pagosa Springs narrow gauge trains were used to transport passengers and freight. Riding my mountain bike on one of the old railroad beds this afternoon, I came across part of what must have been an old locomotive. I stood there for a moment, looked up and down the old rail bed, and imagined the old steam engine struggling to make the grade and spewing smoke and cinder!

Many old timers will easily recognize this building. It was built with pressed concrete blocks designed by the Parr Brothers. Believe it or not, this building is still standing on Lewis Street in downtown Pagosa Springs. What was once San Juan Supply, with delivery trucks driving through the middle of the structure, is now the Two Old Crows art gallery. There is one other building made with the Parr Brothers pressed concrete blocks in downtown Pagosa Springs. Can anyone describe it and its location?

The Pagosa Springs Herald, the newspaper operating in 1896, produced a flyer to attract tourists to Pagosa Springs, "the Carlsbad of America". Pagosa Country is described as having plentiful trout streams where a fisherman can fill a stringer without leaving town. having the "largest hot springs in the world" with a depth measured at 850 feet using a rock tied to a piece of rope. The elk are so tame, they claim, they can be killed without much effort. Black, cinnamon, and grizzly bear are reported so plentiful they can be killed with little effort. Coyotes are also plentiful and can be simply killed with a club!

Step Back in Time This Weekend in Pagosa Springs 🌾
The Historic Gomez Mercantile is open for a limited time—July 3–5—at the Western Heritage Event Center, just off Highway 84.

Originally opened in 1912 along the railroad line in Pagosa Junction, this beloved general store served travelers, ranchers, and families through the early development of the West. Today, it stands preserved just as it was when the doors closed in the 1960s—shelves, displays, and goods all intact.

Named for Rueben G. Gomez, the cherished matriarch of the Gomez family, the store is more than a building—it’s a living museum filled with stories and memory. The Gomez family will be there all weekend to share those stories in person.

Estie Meade Parr, of the Pagosa Pressed Stone company, has been at Chromo the past few weeks getting things ready for the construction of a fine cement block house for P. C. Crowley, on his ranch tow miles above Chromo on the Navajo River. The structure will be 28x32 feet, two stories high. The blocks are made and the foundation will be done in a few days, after which J. Jacobson and Frank Henderson will finish the building. A nice water system will be installed and there will be a few, if any, more, up-to-date and modern homes in the county.

In reviewing Pagosa Springs/Archuleta County's historical economy, the timber industry was large part of it. However, were you aware of the Pagosa Springs Pressed Stone Company? Estie Meade Parr, was the operator of the company. Today the Alley House Restaurant and the Two Old Crows Art Gallery are two of the remaining businesses built with Estie's pressed stone blocks.

Throughout the history of Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County, the timber industry was a big part of the economy. In recent years, in addition to timber sales, the clearing of over overgrowth has been part of the focus of the forest service. Today different colors of paint sprayed on trees informs those clearing or harvesting the timber. Before spray paint, an axe was carried by forest service personnel to mark trees for timber sale. The Pagosa Springs Museum is fortunate to house one of the axes. Come to the museum and check out the marking axe and learn of other timber industry information.
