How close does your finished project usually come to the original plan?

For Janet Stone, the answer isn’t always a perfect match – and that’s part of the fun.

In her "And Now I Know My ABCs!" exhibition, Janet’s planning sketches are displayed alongside the quilts they inspired, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at her creative process. The sketches provide a starting point, but the finished quilts leave plenty of room for creativity, discovery and change along the way.

In fact, Janet says "Garden Variety Sampler" (first quilt shown) is the "only quilt in the series that came out looking mostly like the original drawing."

A new quilt by Paula Nadelstern!

See "KALEIDOSCOPIC XLIX: The I Buried the Lede Patchwork Blues," which is exclusively premiering at Paula's new exhibition at the National Quilt Museum.

Inspired by the journalistic phrase “bury the lede,” Paula has "hidden" her signature motto among layers of marbled blue fabrics. Some letters emerge immediately. Others dissolve into the pattern, inviting you to look a little longer.

📢 ANNOUCEMENT: New exhibition!

Coming September 18, "Pigment, Dye & Thread" is a new exhibition exploring the remarkable ways artists use color, surface and stitching to transform cloth. 🎨

Featuring 19 quilts from The National Quilt Museum’s collection of more than 700 works, this exhibition brings together artists who push the boundaries of contemporary quilting through painting, hand-dyeing and threadwork.

Fluid washes of color meet intricate stitching. Hand-dyed fabrics create depth and atmosphere, while thread painting adds texture, dimension, light and detail.

The result? Quilts that move from abstract compositions and geographic landscapes to forms inspired by the natural world—showing just how versatile cloth can be as an artistic medium.

Featured artists include Katie Pasquini Masopust (whose piece "Allegretto" can be seen here), Colleen Wise and Libby Lehman, each bringing a distinctly different approach to pigment, dye, thread and construction.

A quilt label…on the front of the quilt? 👀

Tula Pink turned a traditionally hidden detail into part of the design of "Tiny Stars" – using the quilt label as a border.

Inspired by an antique quilt she once saw in a museum, Tula appliquéd her name, the year and locations where the quilt was made directly onto the quilt top. Then Angela Walters completed the label by quilting her name across the top border.

As Tula puts it: you know it’s quilted by Angela Walters because “Angela Walters” is quilted. 😉

It’s one of those details you have to see in person, and your chance is running out! “Tula Pink: Twenty Years of Tula Pink” ends September 15.

A is for Absolutely Amazing! 🔤✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us Saturday for our Alphabet Adventure–a morning of learning, creating, moving and playing at The National Quilt Museum!

Our young visitors explored the ABCs with an alphabet scavenger hunt through the museum, cookies from Royal Dansk, story time surrounded by Janet Stone’s colorful alphabet quilts, alphabet yoga, hands-on activities, financial literacy fun and more.

A special thank you to our wonderful partners McCracken County Public Library and Paducah Bank for helping make the day such a success—and to the McCracken County Public Library’s Brary Bus and Paducah Bank WOW! Wagon for adding even more fun to the adventure!

We loved seeing so many children and families filling the museum, exploring the galleries and experiencing art and quilting in ways created especially for them. ❤️

Congratulations Libby! We are so happy for you and so very proud to have three of your gorgeous quilts in the NQM collection.

We are excited to announce that our 2027 Honoree will be Libby Lehman!

Libby Lehman is one of the most talented and creative artists in studio art quilt making— a fine art textile artist, author, speaker, teacher, and judge known for expert craftsmanship, seductive color, spatial complexity, and whimsy. An early innovator with machine quilting and thread embellishment, she helped redefine contemporary quilt making; her quilt, “Joy Ride,” was selected as one of the 100 Best Quilts of the Twentieth Century. Lehman’s over 30 years of teaching brought a rare gift for breaking down complex techniques into simple steps, paired with a warmth that nurtured others& #39; passions. Her influence still touches and inspires the quilt world today.

Celebration for the Induction of Libby Lehman will be on July 15–17th, 2027. Mark your calendars!
