Anne Bellas Viars, art quilter from Nantes, France is in residence at A.I.R. Studio Paducah June 6 - July 4 2025.
Her quilts created for the most part from linens inherited from her great grandmother are hand-dyed, pieced, and stitched. Her designs, primarily abstract explorations in various realms: include her visual diaries and features of the natural world. She refers to her quilts as “open windows” which Bellas hopes will induce a sense of well-being in viewers. An evocative palette (therapeutic colors) are used to achieve this effect.
Music, in this case compositions by J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations are the inspiration for the series she brings to work on at A.I.R. Larger in scale than earlier works, necessarily small due to her tiny Nantes workspace will be easily accommodated at A.I.R. The space factor, the proximity of the National Quilt Museum and the slew of art quilter friends in this country promise a productive stay in Paducah for the artist.
