Whoops. We seemed to have caused a kerfuffle with our sign.
Most people actually have been very supportive of our little sign and message, but we do seem to have ruffled a few feathers, resulting in a series of predictable and repetitive questions so in the hopes of saving ourselves some time, I’ve developed a little FAQ.
1.) don’t you have any morals?
No. None. I am the bisexual non binary trans feminine anarcho-socialist nightmare your mother warned you about.
But seriously, yes. Of course I have morals. I truly don’t believe *most* humans are without morals even if they don’t always act like it or if I don’t always agree with them. But yes, I have morals and that’s kind of the *point*. I care about what’s happening right now with ice’s widespread targeting of undocumented immigrants and I am horrified. It’s something that I cannot and will not morally come to terms with.
2.) what if children see it? Don’t you care about the children? *clutches pearls* Won’t someone think about the children?!
F**k them kids.
But seriously? Yeah I care about the kids. Especially the ones whose families are being ripped apart, who will be traumatized for life by what’s happening right now. I care a lot about them.
3.) How do I explain this to my children?
I don’t even have a joke answer for this, talk to them. Literally have a conversation. Don’t agree with my use of the “f**k” word? Tell them that. I do this with my kids all the time, and I’m one of those weird parents that really enjoys it. Maybe you could be one of those parents too. I think your kids might really appreciate that.
4.) Don’t you have children of your own you monster?!
See #1 - f**k them kids.
But seriously yes I have kids and I love them a lot and I’m trying hard to raise them right. I’m sure like most people I’m far from perfect at this, but I’m doing my best. Which is why I’ve talked extensively with them about this.
Also, curse words are just not a big deal to my family. I promise you my kids have said much worse than what’s on that sign. We just feel there are bigger fish to fry than potty language. I’m aware that’s a value many don’t share and we’ve taught them to respect that.
5.) What about the tourists?! Tourist towns should be neutral! Don’t you care about losing customers?!
No. F**k all of you.
But seriously, we are artists. Believe me our families are already disappointed in us. We have no illusions about becoming rich off of this gig. Are we concerned with making money? Sure to some degree. But not as much as we care about those (there they are again) pesky morals.
I will also say many of the people making this point I do not believe to be doing so in good faith. They are by and large not what you would call “frequent flyers” or even “within a ten mile metaphorical radius of our target demographic.” For the most part this really is not hurting our business, not that that is even the point.
And as for neutrality I’ll quote an actual holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel - “ We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
Neutrality is a privilege. Privilege spends faster than you’d think these days and as q***r people we are all too aware of that. Silence is not an option.
6.) What has the word ‘f**k’ ever done for anyone? Couldn’t you have picked a less vulgar word? What is wrong with you?!
Nah f**k that.
Could I have picked another word? Maybe? But a teacher of mine once said that curse words should be used to draw attention. Now in my every day life it’s more like garlic salt (I throw that s**t on eeeeeverything), but I do think he had a point. Curse words make people notice. Also I’d point you towards my earlier points about values. I just don’t view curse words the way others do. That’s not to say language doesn’t matter - of course it does. Language has incredible power. But curse words are not the power that makes me upset or worried.
7.) Aren’t you just brainwashed by the liberal media?
*sigh* I’m beging you to go read real news, Books, touch some grass literally anything.
8.) When will you change this horrid thing?!
Not for a while. But you should know that even when we do, it may not be better. My partner is in on this now and Whimsy is more vulgar than me without even trying.
To put it succinctly - I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Love and solidarity,
