The Oxford Museum does many things. It of course tells the story of our very historic town, and our Semiquincentennial exhibit is a good story. Oxford, Maryland in the 1740s was a small but active port town on the Tred Avon River. Though modest in size, it played an important role in the to***co trade, linking nearby plantations to larger Chesapeake and Atlantic markets. The town consisted of only a few dozen buildings clustered near the waterfront, including houses, warehouses, taverns, and wharves. Most travel and commerce occurred by boat rather than by road. We ‘rode the tide of the Revolution’, and our exhibit shows how.

You know that we are lucky to have our own museum, where neighbors work diligently to preserve the history of our American small town. We bring neighbors together; we build community. We document the life of Oxford. Historic preservation is promoted with the Hanks Award. And everybody knows that we give great parties! All you have to do is join. The Oxford Museum serves you.

The flags are up at the Oxford Museum, and so is the tide. As our country was carried on the tide of the Revolution, so was Oxford. Just read the words of our fellow Oxfordian, Jeremiah Banning, and you will hear the waves of the Revolution crashing on the shores of our town:

Jeremiah Banning 1750: “Oxford, the most commercial port in Maryland... seven or eight large ships at one time have frequently been lying at Oxford... commerce, splendour and the agreeable hurry of business. “

Jeremiah Banning 1793: “The poor, drooping and forsaken Oxford... whose strands and streets were once covered with busy, noisy crowds, rushing in common from almost every quarter of the Globe, (now) have more the appearance of an uninhabited island...”

Opening Day this Saturday, April 25th @ noon…following the parade. Come and see the story of Oxford during the tumultuous time of our country’s Revolution.

Loyalist? Patriot? It’s time for you to choose! The Oxford Museum opens our Semiquincentennial exhibit on Oxford Day, April 25th. After the parade. Come and you will see the story of our town of Oxford as it was 250 years ago.

Before the Revolution, Oxford, Maryland was a thriving British port. Ships crowded our wharf, carrying to***co, grain, and British goods across the Atlantic. Prosperity bound us to England, but unrest was brewing. When the colonies declared independence, Oxford found itself torn between loyalty to the Crown and the promise of freedom. The choices made here shaped our fortunes for centuries to come.

“Our livelihoods depend on His Majesty’s ships. Rebellion means ruin.”

“We are taxed, yet we have no voice. Enough.”

“I do not know which side to trust. All I know is my ship lies idle.”

Which side would you be on? We know you’d be on the side of the Museum as a member…join, if you haven’t. Come on April 25th and decide for yourself.
