For Staff Saturday, we want to recognize the team of park rangers with Natchez Trace Parkway in Tupelo. These rangers help connect visitors, students, and communities with the stories and landscapes of the Natchez Trace. The Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail includes five separate trail sections totaling more than 60 miles for hiking and horseback riding.

Iconic. The National Park Service ranger flat hat is easy to spot, yet it represents far more than the role of a ranger. Behind that familiar shape is a whole community of people who care for our parks and support every visitor’s experience. Maintenance crews, interpreters, law enforcement officers, scientists, and administrative staff all help keep these places thriving and welcoming.

During National Park Week, the Natchez Trace Parkway honors their work in preserving history, culture, recreation, and natural resources in America’s 250th year.

So, tip your hat to those who wear the park service flat hat, the safety helmet, and the ballcap. Their dedication protects the public lands we all cherish.

For Freedom Friday, we’re visiting the Tennessee Williams Home & Welcome Center in Columbus -- the first home of the legendary playwright Tennessee Williams. When the 1875 house faced demolition in 1993, local preservation advocates moved it to its present downtown location and restored it as a welcome center and literary landmark. Last year, the Hills helped support repairs that will help this important Mississippi site continue welcoming visitors for years to come.

For Thankful Thursday, we’re grateful for Mississippi Main Street and the communities across the Hills that are investing in their historic downtowns. The Main Street Approach helps communities build on the local businesses, historic buildings, public spaces, and stories that give a downtown its character. We’re proud to work alongside Mississippi Main Street and local partners to help preserve heritage while supporting vibrant places to live, work, and explore.

In 2026, the Hills is helping fund Mississippi Main Street Roadmap Refreshes in Booneville, New Albany (pictured), Ripley, and Tupelo. The Roadmap Refreshes will entail a multi-step process that builds local capacity and prepares each community for long-term success in their revitalization efforts.

For Watch Wildlife Wednesday, we’re heading to William Faulkner's Rowan Oak -- and yes, the dogs are invited. After visiting Faulkner’s historic home, take your pup for a walk on Bailey Woods Trail. This National Recreation Trail links Rowan Oak and the University of Mississippi Museum through a wooded landscape Faulkner knew well.

Happy 110th birthday to the National Park Service! Today is also a fee-free day at national parks that normally charge admission. Tupelo and the surrounding area offer an excellent introduction to the stories of the Mississippi Hills -- from the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Tupelo’s Civil Rights Trail sites to the soon-to-open Chickasaw Heritage Center and Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site near Baldwyn. Together, they connect visitors with all four of the Heritage Area’s interpretive themes.

For America in Motion Monday, we’re following the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The Mississippi Hills and regional partners are pursuing the feasibility and market work needed to evaluate a proposed multi-use trail along an existing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers access road. If developed, the TennTom Trail could create new opportunities for walking, cycling, and exploring northeast Mississippi.

For Safety Sunday, we’re looking at how thoughtful planning can make our communities easier -- and more enjoyable -- to explore on foot, by bike, and by car. The Mississippi Hills is working with Ripley, Oxford, New Albany, and regional partners to explore a future William Faulkner Heritage Corridor. The idea is to connect places that shaped Faulkner’s life and writing while helping communities think creatively about walkability, public spaces, cultural assets, and the visitor experience.
