Stacy Cahalan, Therapist & Typographer

Stacy Cahalan, Therapist & Typographer Hey There, I am Stacy! I am a therapist, writer and typographer. I have a hypothesis that we are all wandering this earth looking for meaning and connection.

For me, words hold my world together. Words create stories. Stories create our lives. XOXO. My goal is pretty simple: To design a life with few regrets.....and some damn good stories. And because sharing is caring - enjoy!

Did you know that thousands of years ago, the Greeks and Romans identified “Sirius” as the brightest start in the sky and named it Dog Star?
This star happened to be the brightest when it was the hottest. They believed that Sirius’ brightness added heat to the sun’s heat making some days long, hot and oppressive.

Happy Dog Days of Summer! 🔥

One of my favorite counseling theories is Narrative Therapy — the idea that we can choose to re-author our life story anytime we want. While we can’t change the past, we can re-author its meaning. BUT from experience, I have found that there CAN BE TOO MANY JOURNALS with re-authoring going on.

Today is what I call Journal Transfer Day. The day when I take all recently completed journals and go page by page:
- What ideas do I want to savor?
- What tasks did I forget to do?
- What recurrent thoughts and feelings need some attention?
- What creative projects are flailing?

All of these things get transposed into the new journal.

And then the thought always comes —- I think of our kids trying to decipher this chaos someday.

Kids, Don’t bother trying to read these…but rather give you full permission for a rad bonfire.
You knew I was a little different, you probs don’t need any additional proof?!

Choosing to do hard things…and learning to remain uncomfortable, has been a theme in my client work this week.

The human condition is my favorite mental health condition!! 😂

1. We work hard to make life easier.
2. Life gets easier…and sometimes complacency and boredom follow.
3. We stop learning new things. Our bodies get softer. We feel less inspired.
4. Insert a little scrolling and binge-watching because…maybe there’s inspiration on the internet?!
5. Okay. That didn’t work.
6. Eventually, we realize we need something new- perhaps even a little discomfort in our lives.
7. Okay. We’re ready for a change.
8. WTH. How- and where- do we find the courage to start doing hard things again?

Maybe the goal isn’t to make life as comfortable as possible.
Maybe it’s to become more comfortable being uncomfortable.

In rural Portugal, local bakeries still have “bread routes” where they deliver fresh bread daily to neighbors. It was amazing to be walking through medieval-era neighborhoods and see fresh bread tied to a door handle or sitting on a window sill. This is making me think that I would love to create a “rad love note route” where I leave love notes on people’s door steps.

I think I would much prefer to leave random love notes on random people’s doors until I would probs be caught by those damn camera door bells!

The Camino is pilgram-ing us. Just as expected.
Joy, suffering, bunion pain, inconvenience, co-sleeping and the best memories.
I have paid for a lot of conveniences in this lifetime.

Pilgrimages are just the opposite.
We are paying for a very different recipe.

As the picture says: God is love. Love, and you will be happy.

I have found that my senses can be become “dulled” at home. I take the vistas, colors and textures I see every day for granted.

Or could this be Kansas humidity doing its work on my soul?!

When I leave town, my senses turn back on. I see colors and textures that make me so happy.

As I prepare for this next Camino, I want to intentionally plant some new seeds…for this next chapter.
If this is my shopping list, where does one begin? I want to give and receive more of all of these fruits.

Wanting more of everything.
Perhaps this is my answer.

Stella Cahalan and I are embarking on our second Camino next week.
I love the idea that these are all of the clothes I will need.
It makes me look at my closet and wonder. A LOT.
