Our building is 131 years old this year. The building located at 420th 6th Ave (at the top of 6th Ave. in Ouray was built as a hospital in 1887, to serve the miners and other in the area . It was built by Frank Carney with bricks from his brick yard located where the Ouray Hot Springs pool is located today. The hospital was run by the Sisters of Mercy until 1920. in 1920 the hospital was sold to Dr. Carl. V. Bates who ran the hospital until 1946. The hospital was then sold to the Idorado Mine, which was located on Red Mountain Pass (the Million Dollar Highway). in 1946. The Idorado Mine operated the hospital with Dr. Edward Spangler until its closing in 1964. The building remained closed until 1971 when the community felt the history of mining and ranching in Ouray County should be preserved. With that in mind the Ouray County Historical Society came into being and items were donated and the history of Ouray County was on its way to being preserved and told in what was St. Joseph Hospital for Miners.
