Fairies will be taking up residence in the OMAM Gardens as part of the β€œOnce Upon A Time: The Renaissance” experience, and we need the communities help to prepare the accommodations.

We invite YOU to craft a unique fairy house (as either an individual or a team) for their stay in our magical gardens!

To participate, purchase the official fairy house kit ($10 plus tax) in the museum gift shop. Containing an A-frame template, three craft wood panels, some embellishments, and the base, this kit is your starting point. The template is a suggestion, as your house can be configured in any style you wish, as long as it fits on the provided base.

Please use your own materials to supplement and personalize your kit, or come use our supplies during the Fairy House Makers Day (Saturday, Oct. 17, between 12:00 and 3:00pm in the OMAM classroom).

The contest is limited to no more than 20 entries, so each fairy house has an equally visible spot.

Garden fairies live far away from our human world, so please do not incorporate political content or company branding in your design. OMAM staff reserves the right to decline any entry that doesn't meet these guidelines.

Because the fairy houses will be displayed outdoors for a few weeks, we recommend using tacky glue to assemble your house and securing it to the base. We also encourage using materials like wood, sticks, dried leaves, rocks, raffia, and other natural items, especially because magical garden fairies often forget to move their decorations inside when it gets windy or rainy.

All fairy houses must be dropped off at the museum's front desk (during normal operating hours) before 4:00pm Monday, Oct. 19. When you bring your fairy house to OMAM, we will photograph it and get some details from you. We'd love to take your photo with your house too!

All houses will be numbered and placed in the Gardens by OMAM staff. To keep voting fair and fun, makers' names will not be displayed, so every house is judged on its own fairy charm (though makers are welcome to share their house and its number with their friends and family).

From October 21 to November 14, OMAM visitors have the opportunity to vote for their favorite house. One free ballot is given with museum admission. Additional ballots can be purchased in the gift shop.

The People's Choice Award will be announced after the Thou Art performance on Sunday, Nov. 15. Makers do not need to be present to win. The winner will be contacted by staff and will receive a crystal fairy ball.

Makers can pick up their fairy house inside the museum from Monday, Nov. 16 through Friday, Nov. 20, during normal operating hours

Join painter and mixed media artist Sylvia Gortz for a two-day deep dive into the medium. Day one covers the full technical toolkit: blending, layering, pressure control, scumbling, stippling, sgraffito, value, and color mixing. Day two puts it all to work in an expressive portrait, built step by step from initial drawing to bold color and finishing details.

Whether you're new to oil pastels or looking to add a fresh medium to your practice, you'll leave with a finished portrait, a set of technique studies, and plenty of ideas. All supplies included.

That shoebox of ticket stubs, old photos and pressed leaves you can't bring yourself to toss? Award-winning artist Priscilla Humay wants to show you how to turn it into fine art. Having taught everywhere from the Chicago Botanic Garden to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, she loves helping artists of every level find their own style. Just bring your treasures and your imagination!

In this hands-on workshop, she'll guide you as you transform your scraps and mementos (torn paper, fabric, twigs, photos, trinkets, the fun stuff you just can't throw away) into a one-of-a-kind artwork on a wood panel. Using Lineco and matte medium to hold it all together, you'll layer colored pencil over your collage and then enhance with acrylic paint. Your finished piece is ready to hang, no frame needed.

Ride with us on Saturday, October 17th, as we venture across Florida to visit one of the premier arts institutions in the state, the Tampa Museum of Art! Your guide, curator Ruth Grim, will provide commentary and informative videos during the bus ride. In addition to experiencing TMA's many art installations, our group has the opportunity to take a docent-led tour and to enjoy lunch at one of the many nearby restaurants. Participants also may opt to bring their own lunch and enjoy the spaces surrounding the museum.

TMA has been a cultural mainstay on the Gulf coast for 100 years and has recently mounted an exciting group of exhibitions in celebration of their centennial. Some of these include Mysteries of the Nile: Ancient Egypt, Avant Garde: Remarkable Women in the Collection, The Etruscans: A Mysterious Italian People, and Life & Death in the Ancient World. Complete with extensive and informative labels and texts, these exhibitions provide a rare opportunity to experience and learn about ancient art in a Florida museum.

Our chartered bus will depart from OMAM promptly at 8:00am and will return back by 6:30pm. The non-refundable trip registration fee ($75 OMAM members; $85 future members) covers transportation and Ruth's discussions. Participants are responsible for paying for their own admission, meals, and other expenses. Since the Tampa Museum of Art is part of the North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM) Association, our museum's premier-level members are able show their current OMAM Membership Card and receive free admission. Those without NARM benefits will need to pay admission upon arrival ($25 for adults; $15 for seniors).
