: The most expensive painting by J.M.W. Turner to sell at auction is returning to Sotheby’s London this fall, carrying an estimate in the region of £50 million ($66 million).
In 2014, Rome, from Mount Aventine (1836), a hazy morning view over the Eternal City, changed hands for the third time in its history, setting the artist’s record by doubling its low estimate and selling for £30.3 million (then $47.5 million). Accounting for inflation, if the painting meets its estimate, the consignor will realize a roughly 15 percent return on investment.
