Have you seen this building off 144th Place and wondered what it was? The Chiappetti Slaughterhouse is one of our Heritage Sites. It was built by Joseph Rust in 1915 on what is now Crystal Tree and was used as a smokehouse. Fiore Chiappetti acquired the land and outbuildings in 1934 and used the building as a slaughterhouse. Then, the Andrew Corporation bought the property in 1948. They used the slaughterhouse as storage. In 1986, the Village of Orland Park saved the slaughterhouse from demolition. The building was moved carefully along 144th Place from the Andrew Corporation property and placed in its current location.

This is a photograph from approximately 1885-1910 of Beck & Sons on Beacon Avenue (present-day Player Piano Clinic & Emporium). The store started as a butcher shop but Charles Beck, Sr. eventually sold beef, pork, dairy products, fruits and vegetables. He essentially acted as the middle man between the farm or ranch and the grocers and butchers. This business was most likely gone by 1913, when Charles, Sr. passed away. At some point after 1920, the Philip E. Steffen Clothing & Shoes store opened in the lot. The Steffens went out of business by March 1929 and, in 1931, it is believed that the building burned down.

In the early morning hours of November 29, 1912, a terrible fire swept through Alpine Heights, IL (a village in Orland township). It destroyed nearly every building (such as the ones in the photograph) except for the train station. The present-day Alpine Heights subdivision is named for the town of Alpine. Many of the street names now are the same ones from over a century ago!

In 1879, Henry Laun opened one of Orland’s first general stores. The building was physically moved from the area around 135th and Ridgeland to 14314 Union Avenue. In 1897, John and Albert Loebe purchased the building. The brothers opened the store on January 2, 1898 and named it “Loebe General Store.” In the 1920s, the Loebe brothers acquired their first truck and used it to make deliveries. John and Albert ran the store together until 1926, when Albert passed away. John continued running the store until 1946, and then the store was sold to John’s sons, Stewart and Franklin Loebe. In total, the general store was in business for 71 years, closing in 1969. The photograph below is from 1899. It shows a salesman on the left, Albert Loebe in the middle, and John Loebe on the right.
