Don't forget to mark your calendars for the 249th Commemoration of the Battle of Oriskany - Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 7 pm at the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site on Route 69.

Each year, the Oneida Indian Nation joins with its neighbors to commemorate the sacrifices of our respective ancestors at the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777. Because of their mutual steadfast commitment to sovereignty and independence, the United States of America was forged.

The annual Commemoration will take place on Thursday, August 6 at 7 p.m. at the Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site on Rte. 69 in Oriskany, NY.

Did you know Oneida County's first agricultural fair was held in Whitestown in October 1818? Check out the prize for the best corn grown!

In honor of fair season, we are throwing it back to Oneida County’s very first agricultural fair, held in Whitestown in October 1818! This stunning silver tankard was awarded as an “Honorable Testimony, Oneida Agricultural Premium to Thomas Halbert” for his prize-winning corn. Halbert was a prominent local farmer and early citizen who lived in Westmoreland and Whitesboro.

We have a firsthand account of this exact tankard in action! In a rare historical coincidence, the journal of Dr. Alexander Coventry (1783-1831) records a visit to Halbert's home soon after the fair. Coventry wrote: “He invited me to the house... we had a good drink of cider from the silver tank he had received for his corn.”

In July 1783, General George Washington rode into the Mohawk Valley on a vital 750-mile military mission. With the Revolutionary War winding down, he needed to secure America’s vulnerable western frontier.

Accompanied by NY Governor George Clinton, Washington traveled deep into Herkimer County to inspect key outposts. At Fort Herkimer, he met with Colonel Marinus Willett and designated the site as the primary western depot for incoming army supplies.

He then pushed forward to Fort Dayton (modern-day Herkimer), which stood as the westernmost active American defensive outpost in the valley after the destruction of Fort Stanwix. Washington personally inspected its fortifications to ensure the frontier was safe.

This trip did more than secure the border—it sparked Washington's vision for the nation’s future. Fascinated by the Mohawk River, he immediately saw its potential as a commercial water highway connecting the Atlantic to the Great Lakes, a vision that foreshadowed the Erie Canal.

You can stand where Washington stood. While Fort Dayton was removed in 1832 for canal expansion, a bronze historic marker honors his visit at the Historic Four Corners intersection (North Main & Court Streets) in the Village of Herkimer.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Joe Robertaccio's Lost Battlefield presentation yesterday! We hope you enjoyed learning more about the Battle of Oriskany and the resources being used to match first hand accounts to the geography of the site.

Mr. Robertaccio will be back on Sunday, August 2, 2026 at 2 pm for Oriskany Battlefield Reconstructed, a deeper look at the soldiers on the field using the same techniques.
