Oriental's History Museum

A community-based 501 (c) 3 non-profit institution, preserving the heritage and culture of the town of Oriental.

Our Mission:

Oriental’s History Museum is committed to expanding the public’s sense of community through an understanding of the Town’s history and its place in Pamlico County and eastern North Carolina. To achieve this purpose, the Museum collects and preserves artifacts and information that document the town’s history and produces interpretive exhibits, educational programs, and publications. O

ur Displays and Artifacts tell the story of the simple life of a fishing and lumbering town turned into a haven for leisure activities, boating, and sailing.

Oriental's History Museum would like to give a heartfelt Thank You to all of our Summer Series Speakers for coming and sharing your knowledge, experience and adventures with everyone! You have raised awareness of the Museum and expanded everyone's knowledge about life on The Mighty Neuse! We also want to extend a great thank you to all of our audiences and for their generous donations to support events like this! It has been a great summer! We have a number of events coming up this Fall, so stay tuned.

Our final Summer Speaker Series presentation is our own Lou Ostendorff at 6:30pm Thursday, August 27th, talking about boats and ships that were Rollin' on the River! Please join us to wrap up our Speaker Series on the Mighty Neuse! Please arrive a little early to get settled. Admission is always free, donations are welcome. We hope to see you there!

We want to give a Thank You shout out to all who packed the Museum on Thursday night for Turtle Time with Turtle Midyette! I think we set a record with 54 people! Thanks to Karen Thomas Real Estate and Rick's NC BBQ for sharing extra chairs too. It's great to have nice neighbors! Our last Speaker Series presentation will be Thursday, August 27th at 6:30pm with Lou Ostendorff talking about the ships and boats Rollin' on the River.

Our Speaker Series welcomes Turtle Midyette for "Turtle Time ~ The Boom and Bust Era of the Early 1900's in Oriental" this Thursday, August 20th at 6:30pm! Come hear about the history of the boatyards, and when the lumber trade was Rollin' on the River. Arrive a little early to get settled. Admission is always free and donations are graciously accepted. We are located at 802 Broad St, Oriental. Our last Speaker Series for the summer will be Lou Ostendorff next Thursday for Steaming on the River ~ The Boats That Traveled the Neuse before Rt. 55 was built.

We welcome Leslie Mead to our Speaker Series Thursday, August 13th at 6:30pm at the Museum. A retired archaeologist, Leslie will talk about Beachcombing, what you can learn from what you find walking the beach after a storm. She'll also share some of the Museum's collection found by Nancy and Frieda Winfrey on the shores of the Neuse River over the years. We are located at 802 Broad St., Oriental. Please arrive a little early to get settled. Admission is always free, donations are accepted! Hope to see you Thursday!

Mark your calendars for next Thursday when Leslie Mead, retired archeologist and Friend of the History Museum, shares treasures found along the Neuse!

Our Speaker Series welcomes back Dale Montgomery Thursday, August 6th at 6:30pm. Known for his ghost stories, Dale will tell the story of the Neuse River and the people who used it, from fishing to showboats, log rafts to blockade running, native Indians, Palatine immigrants and the slave trade. Please arrive a little early to get settled. The Museum is located at 802 Broad St., Oriental. Admission is always free, donations are accepted. We hope you will join us!

The Speaker Series is partnering with The Old Theater to welcome Sound Rivers on Thursday, July 30th at 6:30pm to present Protecting the Neuse. Grab a neighbor or friend and come hear the Riverkeepers give up to date information on the river, quality of the water and how you can help. Doors open at 6:00pm, Admission is Free. Donations are welcome. The program begins promptly at 6:30pm. We recommend coming a little early to find parking, as we are anticipating a large attendance. The Old Theater is located at 609 Broad Street, Oriental.
