ā€œA Touch of Orange: Selections from The W.H. Stark House Collectionā€ features colorful decorative arts and artifacts once owned by Miriam and William Stark, including Miriam’s mahjong set from the 1920s.

More than a century ago, mahjong was a popular social pastime, and Miriam likely gathered with friends to play in The W.H. Stark House’s Sitting Room. Today, the game continues to bring people together. šŸ€„ļø

Through our Community Voice project, Dee Dee Windham, retired librarian and part-time educator at Shangri La Gardens, shared her perspective on that connection between past and present:

ā€œToday the way we play mahjong has changed some in style, but not in spirit. My friends and I sill gather around a table to play, but our experience is more casual. Like the game of the 1920s, our mahjong sessions are about atmosphere, conversations, competition and mostly about connection."

šŸ”ø See Miriam’s ivory and bamboo mahjong set for yourself in ā€œA Touch of Orange,ā€ on view at the Stark Museum of Art!
