It takes 8 gallons of sorghum juice and a whole lot of time over the fire to make one gallon of molasses. Our little sorghum patch (about 1,000 square feet) yielded 3/4 of a gallon of molasses. Good thing a little goes a long way!

Introducing the Mahaffie Skills School!

Every few months, we’ll be hosting a themed workshop series. Our first series, Backyard Livestock, will take place on Saturdays in November.

In this series of hands-on workshops, you’ll learn the basics of handling and caring for common livestock animals and have the chance to practice your skills with Mahaffie staff. No animal experience is required. Sign up for one workshop or all four!

Please note that due to the hands-on nature of the workshops in this series, participants must be 18 or older.

Today’s the day!

Join us today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Chuckwagon Cook-Off and sorghum harvest!

🍖 Sample food from five different chuckwagons and vote for your favorite dishes. Samples start at noon, and winners will be announced at 2 p.m. 🏆

🎟️ $9/adult, $7/child, ages 4 & under are free. Olathe residents get $2 off admission!

Vote with your stomach this Saturday at our Chuckwagon Cook-off! Five chuckwagon teams will prepare a main dish, side dish, bread, coffee, and dessert. It’s up to you to try ’em all and vote for the winners. Doors open at 10 a.m., and samples start at noon. 🫘

🎟️The Cook-off is included with the price of living history admission: $9/adult, $7/child (ages 5 & up), and free for ages 4 & under. Olathe residents receive $2 off.
