I paint trees I keep asking what they remember. How much they have survived. I paint in oil, slowly, building up layers the way life builds up. I want you to-feel the day I am painting. The crisp air, warm sun, the gnarly beauty of this ancient tree.

This made me smile this morning…..

Because sometimes I’m afraid of ruining what I have.
Sometimes I stop too soon.
Sometimes I question whether it’s even a painting.

And then I see this Joan Mitchell quote saying the same thing.

We tend to imagine the artists we admire moving with certainty —
bold, fearless, decisive.
But doubt lives in the studio.
Fear of overworking lives there.
So does the opposite — not pushing far enough.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about restraint.
About how far to take something.
About the tension between holding back and pushing through.

It’s such a fine line —
one more gesture could bring it alive,
or collapse it entirely.

Maybe that tension never leaves.
Maybe mastery isn’t the absence of doubt.
Maybe it’s learning to stand in front of the work and feel all of it —
fear, hesitation, impatience —
and stay with it anyway.

That feels strangely comforting.
