Polly Sharp Fine Art In my paintings
I honor the memory of my Cherokee Indian ancestors. They loved the land and the land cared for them.

I paint their story in the rolling hills & clouds, sweet sunrises, & flaming sunsets. .com .com

The Lunchbox Letter, Dalhart, Texas, 1937
Roy Whitaker was 12 in 1937. His dad had already gone to California to “find work.” He’d been gone 11 months. Every morning, Roy’s mama, Ada, packed him a lunch for school: one biscuit, sometimes with lard if they had it. And every day, she put a folded note inside.

The notes never said “I love you.” They said things like: “Wind from the north today. Keep your collar up.” Or “Daddy fixed fences in weather worse than this. You can do math test.” Or “Save half for walk home.”

Roy kept every note in a cigar box. In 1938 his daddy sent for them. They loaded the truck with three plates, the cigar box, and a sack of seeds. They made it to Bakersfield. Roy grew up, became a teacher.

When Ada died in 1979, they found the cigar box. On the bottom, in his 12-year-old handwriting, Roy had written back on one of them: “Mama, we’re gonna be okay. I saved my biscuit.” He never sent it. He didn’t need to.
