This Original Oil on Linen measures 27” x 35 ½” W and is titled, “Rule Valley”. The piece is unsigned which is typical of the time in which this piece was created. The painting is attributed to artist Thomas Hand (1771-1804) who is known for landscape and rustic scene paintings. This beautiful landscape painting, likely a product of the Scottish landscape tradition around the turn of the 19th century, captures a sweeping view of the Rule Water Valley in Scotland. The composition utilizes classical elements, guiding the eye from the shadowed, richly textured foreground, dominated by a dense thicket of trees on the right, toward a bright, expansive middle ground and distant horizon. A figure is prominently positioned near a rustic wooden bridge crossing a small stream or the Rule Water itself, adding a sense of scale and human narrative to the scene. The interplay of light and shadow is crucial, with dramatic, voluminous clouds breaking to illuminate the distant valley, characterized by rolling hills, scattered houses, and the suggestion of a village or town. The artist employs a palette of deep, earthy tones in the foreground contrasting with the soft blues, yellows, and greens of the sunlit distance. The piece is framed in 4 ½” ornate baroque frame finished in 22kt gold.

Thomas Hand
(1771-1804)
Thomas Hand was an English painter who was known as a follower of George Morland. Hand exhibited a landscape with the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1790. From 1792 to 1804, he occasionally exhibited at the Royal Academy. Some of his pictures were close enough to Morland's manner to have been misattributed as they both exhibited at the academy in the same time period. While much of his life is unknown his skill and talent are evident in the examples of his work that survived to modern day. His best compositions focus on rustic scenes: farms and hunting and rich, textured landscapes informed by Dutch Golden Age painting.
