Patricia Ritter is an award-winning artist and educator who has dedicated over five decades to the sophisticated medium of oil on porcelain. Patricia brings a wealth of technical expertise and passion to the art of porcelain painting. She has spent decades refining her craft through seminars and private study with the industry’s most esteemed masters. As a teacher, she focuses on helping her students break free from “compositional traps,” and encouraging them to explore the medium’s endless potential. Through her classes and her own vibrant porcelain paintings, she strives to pass on the technical secrets of oil on porcelain while encouraging her students to find their own “internal response” to the beauty around them.

In her class, you will paint one of Patricia’s stunning designs, a butterfly vase! You will work with pen and ink, luster and matte paints.

Which one is your favorite? Shown are a few of the Mamezara plates from the Asia display, all painted and donated by Tokyo China Painters (Japan).

Mamezara are small round plates that fit in the palm of your hand are specifically used for individual portions of seasonings, side condiments, or soy sauce. In a traditional setting, these Mamezara are placed next to larger bowls to balance the table arrangement.

The Museum has a new display for our Satsuma Palace Urns and we couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much, Mike Forrest, for donating your woodworking skills to create this for our exhibit, making these collection pieces stand out beautifully.

These Satsuma Palace Urns, donated by Mary Miles Clanton (1989), are traditional Japanese pottery that originated in the Satsuma Domain on Kyushu Island of Japan during the late 16th century. Like porcelain, these urns are also a ceramic but typically made from earthenware. Early potters were influenced by Korean and Chinese techniques, leading to the development of earthenware that showcased beautiful, vibrant glazes.
Characterized by their cream-colored or beige backgrounds, they are often adorned with gold and detailed painted decorations that may include floral motifs, figures, and traditional scenes. They are functional but also used as beautiful decorative pieces in traditional ceremonies including weddings, tea ceremonies, and memorial services.
Satsuma urns are often regarded as symbols of prosperity, good fortune, and ancestral reverence, elevating their importance in various cultural and social contexts.

FROM THE COLLECTION: a tea set fit for a queen, painted with green luster and roman gold. Wouldn't this be perfect for the Mad Hatter Tea Party coming up October 15? It's on permanent view in the Porcelain Art Museum and was painted by Paula White (TX).
