EARTH / ETHER: featuring Colour Maisch & Emily Plewe

Friday, February 17th, 6-9pm

This is a very special show featuring two women artists whose work naturally and beautifully compliments the other. Rooted in the earth element with Colour’s porcelain and ink sculptures (slides 1,3), the exhibition is expanded by Emily’s abstract paintings (slides 2,4) that are inspired by cosmology and the vastness of the universe. It’s a very striking, yet meditative show that allows us to consider the connections between this world and the next, and our place within it.

See you Friday night!

Studio Visit: Colour Maisch | Salt Lake City

Colour’s work is a true collaboration with nature: for her porcelain and ink sculptures, the artist mixes foraged grasses with pre-fired clay to form a single mass of material. The grasses burn out in the kiln, leaving behind a skeleton of their initial shape along with a continuously shedding white ash. The pieces are then soaked in ink water for weeks or more, allowing time to leave its mark on the final piece.

The artist considers the entire process a resurrection of sorts, stating that “in the end, we all degrade to material and return to matter…In my understanding of the world, we also return to something that is just as alive- albeit different.”

When it comes to collecting and curating art in her space, SLC-based fashion photographer Heidi Gress has an all-in approach that she describes as “eclectic maximalism.” Her home is made from repurposed oil drums that expand and contract depending on the season - its unconventional shape makes for a fun yet challenging environment to design and display art. “If it makes me happy, it goes on my walls,” she says. Good advice for all you art + home lovers out there 🙂

“All Things Remaining” by Elizabeth Alexander, made from cut wallpaper and Tyvek and displayed at Ogden Contemporary Arts Center. The cutout patterns from this piece were used to construct its companion piece, “All Things Bright & Beautiful,” images 3-4. Both were displayed for Ideal Home at OCA this year, one of my favorite projects featuring and 💗

Says the artist:
“Raised to see the possibility in found or unwanted things, I regard the domestic environment as an extension of human ingenuity; every curtain sewn by mom, steel furniture made by dad, a dollhouse from old bookshelves. From a similar stock of thrifted items, I collaborate with the history of an object as my raw material. Once a youthful exercise in curiosity, I find catharsis in purposeful acts of deconstruction and revitalization of these found materials. Objects and spaces that hold a certain potency within culture can be imagined in ways that reveal truth under the surface.”

Currently on view at the Springville Museum of Art: a special collaboration between Art House and | , in which we curated two galleries of mid-century interior design and decorative arts as part of the exhibition, “Mixed Reviews: Utah Art at Mid-Century.”

Cody and I designed the space with sourced vintage furniture and paintings from the Museum’s permanent collection; we chose paintings from the period that exhibited the mood we associate with mid-century and the vibe we wanted folks to experience in the space. We kept the furniture period-correct, but approached the art curation with contemporary arrangements and included a few modern touches. We wanted the environment to feel nostalgic while also pointing to the continued relevance of mid-century style.

On view through May 13th, 2023, along with nearly 70 artworks from the Museum’s collection by traditional and modern artists working in Utah in the 1940s to 1960s.
