The Palace Hotel, an Odessa landmark built in 1917 by Chris Hemmerling, originally was a two story structure with housekeeping rooms upstairs and family quarters on the main floor. A third story was added and the apartments were converted to transient rooms when repairs were made after a fire in 1927 damaged the second floor. Mr and Mrs C.R. Haskins bought the hotel in 1945, changing the name from Hemmerling Hotel to the Palace. Mrs. Haskins daughters retain ownership of the property. The hotel has been closed to business since 1987 and from then was used as a private residence.
