Although alligators are often portrayed as ruthless and violent, Niki and I have come to appreciate their softer side during our years immersed in over a million acres of Everglades wilderness.

We’ve witnessed the courtship of the resident alligators and the protectiveness of the female as she watches after her hatchlings for their first two years. She discourages gators other than her mate from entering the pond, driving off intruders with a territorial bellow and physical displays while welcoming her mate with soft rumbles.

Like the majority of wild animals, these ancient reptiles can be dangerous and should be respected. When it comes to wildlife, never take your safety for granted when you’re out in the wild.

Conny Randolph - Resident Artist

It was the day after a tropical storm had passed, and the world still carried its mark - the wind was restless, the clouds heavy, the air damp with rain. The sea’s edge felt wild and moody, and to me, that was the perfect time to explore...and photograph.

My approach has never been driven by science or technical precision. Instead, it is an instinctive pursuit, an earnest attempt to hold onto those moments, elements, and conditions that fill me with joy and excitement and remind me why I love being alive.

For me, a photograph is a time capsule - a way to return to the damp winds, the shifting skies, and that electric sense of being fully present. Each image holds not just the scene, but the feeling, the awe of standing at the edge of the sea on a storm-touched day, alive to the raw and fleeting beauty all around.

Fakahatchee Strand but mostly somewhere in my mind… I have always had fun playing with photography. However, I feel that “true” photography is the act of capturing a moment in time.

This is NOT one of those images. This is the kind of photography that doesn’t yet have a name…is it graphic art, or photo-graphic art, or…? What is a piece of photography called when it is NOT a moment in time and when it is fictional?

If you can think of a name or if it already has a name, let me know. Anyway, this is a combination of three different images and then hand-painted. It was fun to play around with the photograph to create a fictional scene.

Swamp walks don’t always mean soggy feet. This spring, one of our guests suited up for a private tour through the backyard wetlands of Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery while staying comfortably on the paved path.

Surrounded by towering cypress trees, native orchids perch on trunks and branches, lush ferns lining the trail, and aquatic plants thriving amidst the pond apple and pop ash trees, she was able to experience the beauty and atmosphere of the swamp firsthand — all without getting wet.

Every walk through the Everglades is a unique experience in itself.

I enjoyed photographing Little Butternut several years earlier, so when I had the opportunity to visit the Florida Bay again, I couldn't resist. It was interesting to see how the island had changed. The sand spit had shifted after both a hurricane and a tropical storm hit the area. However, it was still a beautiful island, deserving of many photographs!

Experience the swamp in a whole new way! During the dry season in the Everglades, water levels naturally drop. Right now, our swamp is completely dry - a little earlier than usual, but not unexpected for this time of the year.

If you've ever thought about going on a swamp walk but weren’t too keen on wading through water, this is the perfect time. No water means dry trails, easy walking, and a rare look at the Everglades from a different perspective.

Dry season swamp walks reveal a whole new side of the Everglades. As water levels recede, ancient limestone bedrock emerges like a natural stone pathway through the swamp. Grasses burst into bloom and the trees fill thick with fresh foliage, creating the feeling of wandering through a wild botanical garden deep in the heart of Big Cypress. 🌿📷
