A visit to the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA), opened in 1991 in historic Ocean Springs, MS, is an enchanting and unique experience. The museum is dedicated to Walter Inglis Anderson, American master, whose depictions of the plants, animals, and people of the Gulf Coast have placed him among the forefront of American painters of the Twentieth Century; and to his brothers, Peter Anderson (1901-1984), master potter and founder of Shearwater Pottery; and James McConnell Anderson (1907-1998), noted painter and ceramist. The watercolors, drawings, oils, block prints, ceramics, and carvings by the three Anderson brothers are all represented in the museum’s permanent collection. Diverse changing exhibitions, many featuring the work of other significant artists, occur throughout the year. The museum’s sky lit interior of warm southern yellow pine includes a main galleria and two additional galleries, which echo the natural beauty and simplicity of its setting. Adjacent to the museum is the Ocean Springs Community Center, home of Walter Anderson’s largest mural. Born in 1944 in New Iberia, Louisiana, often called the heart of Cajun Country, George Rodrigue discovered his passion for art while bedridden with polio in the third grade. What began as a way to pass the time grew into a lifelong artistic journey, leading him to study at the University of Louisiana and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California.

Returning to his Louisiana roots, Rodrigue built a legacy celebrating Cajun culture, folklore, and the landscapes of the bayou. His "Bayou Collection" marked a pivotal chapter in his career, introducing the world to the early beginnings of his iconic Blue Dog. Inspired by the loup-garou, a legendary Cajun werewolf, "The Watchdog" captured imaginations and helped shape the imagery that would become Rodrigue’s signature.

✨ Experience the story behind the icon at WAMA! On view through January 14, 2027, "The Bayou Collection by George Rodrigue" features 40 original paintings created between 1981 and 1984. Organized by the LSU Museum of Art, this remarkable exhibition explores the mystery, legends, and cultural spirit of Louisiana’s bayous through Rodrigue’s distinctive visual storytelling.

Join us for Art After Dark on Friday, October 23 from 6 - 9PM 🌙 for an immersive night where you can experience George Rodrigue’s Bayou Collection Brought back to life! 👻

The museum will open late as award-winning WINGS performers become the characters from Rodrigue's paintings to tell their stories. Participants will be guided through the galleries "haunted house style," and end on the Traveler Cafe lawn for live music, community artmaking, and treats!

This event is recommended for ages 13+ with parental guidance, and festive attire is encouraged!

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day! A day honoring the many Tribal Nations found in North America and acknowledging the Nations’ efforts, struggles, cultural significance, and sovereignty. It is celebrated on the second Monday of October each year.

Indigenous refers to the first or earliest group of people who have lived in a geographic region before the arrival of settlers or colonials. The Southeast is home to many Indigenous Nations and their descendants. The Biloxi Nation is one of those and Walter Anderson featured figures from the group on the walls of The Community Center of Ocean Springs based on d'Iberville's logs from 1699.

The Biloxi Nation was adopted by the Tunica Nation in the 1800’s. The Tunica are a migratory nation that traveled south along the Mississippi River in the 17th and 18th centuries. They are known today as the Tunica-Biloxi Nation and are also home to members of the Choctaw, Avoyel, and Ofo Peoples.

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we invite you to visit WAMA and experience the Community Center murals firsthand. Take a moment to reflect on the histories and cultures represented in Walter Anderson’s work and the enduring presence of Indigenous Peoples throughout our region.

WAMA is excited to welcome Selena John from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians to tell us all about her tribe and share her favorite folk tales.

Storyteller Spotlights are Saturday museum events that are free and fun for the whole family! Visitors will meet a MS storyteller and participate in activities. Following the event, guests are invited to view the museum at no cost!

| Two Gulf South Visionaries: Walter Anderson & George Rodrigue

What do Walter Anderson and George Rodrigue have in common? More than you might expect.

Working a generation apart, both artists drew inspiration from the landscapes, folklore, and cultural traditions of the Gulf South, transforming regional subjects into distinctly American works of art.

Yet their contributions to American art history have not always received the recognition they deserve. Anderson’s artistic achievements are often overshadowed by his unconventional life, while Rodrigue’s remarkable success with the Blue Dog can obscure the significance of his earlier Cajun paintings.

A new essay explores the fascinating parallels between these two artists, their places within the tradition of American Regionalism, and why their work deserves a broader place in the American art historical canon.

The conversation comes to life at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where The Bayou Collection by George Rodrigue is on view through January 9, 2027.
