I am in love with this Unicorn 🦄 design by Rob Snyder!

Livestream tutorial happening today (Saturday, October 11) at 12pm EDT on YouTube. The recording will remain available online once the class has ended. Link in comments below.

I folded this beauty from a 15cm sheet of Tie Dye patterned origami paper from Tuttle Publishing.

This clever equine design makes good use of pleats, rabbit ears, and inside reverse folds to create this approachable four-legged creature. It also doubles well as a traditional origami horse with a simple modification of tucking the horn underneath the muzzle (demonstrated in this tutorial). Lean this model if you need a solid, simple Chinese Zodiac Origami Horse model for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

Recommended paper: a larger piece of kami or any thin paper ranging from 7-10in. If you use larger paper, you probably want a sheet that is a little bit heavier. Smaller paper (6in/15cm or smaller) may be especially challenging when first learning the model, as this model shrinks down a lot.

The Foldspace Autumn Online Retreat kicks off today with two classes, starting with my Corrugation Candies at 11am EDT and followed by a class at 3pm EDT featuring Black & White Color Change models designed by Sy Chen (note that the Skull is actually a variation of one of Sy's models created by Christianne Bettens). Tonight we will end the day with a Zoom-style "Late Nite Folding" session from 8-10pm EDT.

This weekend'd event will mark my last big hurrah in the Oberlin Foldspace location. I certainly wanted to go out with a bang, and I'm thrilled for this retreat's line-up of models and designers. I think you will be, too.

It's not too late to register, and even if you can't make the live sessions, recordings of all the classes will remain available to participants for future viewing. Link in comments below!

Bat, designed by me! 🦇

I don’t design a lot of figurative origami but every now and then, to my surprise and delight, a model will emerge from the paper. Seldom have I sat down with a specific subject in mind, as was the case here. I was actually attempting to design something else entirely, but this is what I got. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, too! Both in regard to its sequence and end result.

You can learn this bat at my Autumn Online Retreat, happening this weekend! I am also giving out diagrams for the bat to attendees of the event (which were graciously drawn my dear friend, colleague, and retreat special guest, Julie Juniper).

"Mauve Pod"
Folded from a sheet of heavy-weight Himalayan Lokta

I made this piece during my residency at Berea College earlier this year, but never got around to posting it. This pod is currently on display in an group exhibition being held in honor of one of my dear college art professors, Sarah Schuster, who is retiring after a long career at Oberlin. The show consists of over 100 works created by past students of Sarah from over the years!

You can learn the basics to this folding technique at my upcoming Foldspace Online Autumn Retreat, happening this coming weekend. (Sept 27-29, https://foldspace.circle.so/c/autumn-online-retreat-info)

Toad, designed by William Hartman
Folded from “Rhino Hide” paper

Square Twist Tessellations folded from "Elephant Hide" paper

This delightful little creature features a clever use of a square twist tessellation tiling, originally pioneered by Shuzo Fujimoto. You can learn the square twist in the most recent episode of Foldspace LIVE! on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/live/BtvJq1wASqw

I am teaching William's wonderful Toad at the upcoming Foldspace Autumn Online Retreat happening this weekend, Sept 27-29.

Foldspace has found a new home in Louisville, KY! Keep reading to learn how you can help create the new Foldspace Studio…

This spot is located in the vibrant and artsy Germantown/Schnitzelburg neighborhood. The new studio will live on the second floor of the 5-0-Lou building and has a second smaller room that I plan to use as a dedicated video production space. I will also have access to a large adjacent space for classes and other events, which is run by a really awesome independent improvisation school called Improv 502. I am so excited for the possibilities!!

So now I am asking for your support in helping make this transition a reality. I am seeking contributions to help cover the moving and start-up expenses for this relocation. In order for me to secure this new space, I needed to sign a lease before officially ending the one for my Oberlin location. Meaning I’m essentially having to pay double rent for the month of September, plus security deposit. It would also be super helpful to have a little bit of a cushion once I land in Louisville, as it will take me a bit of time to become more established and to garner some new connections and opportunities. Link in Bio.

I would also like to send a small origami gift to anyone who contributes!

Additionally, you can also support me by signing up for my upcoming Autumn Online Retreat.

Thank you so much for reading, and please stay tuned for all the new and exciting developments at Foldspace Origami Studio!!

Sincerely,
James
