Folk artist Kelly Gallagher is a retired art teacher who creates spun cotton artwork influenced by antique holiday decorations crafted in Eastern Europe over 150 years ago. She loves the playfulness of the humanlike figures found in vintage decorations and postcards. Kelly uses the original old method of placing thin strands of cotton onto an armature then building up the form layer by layer. Once the “cotton critter” is complete, she paints it then embellishes it with an assortment of various extra materials. Each ornament is individually signed and its uniqueness reflects Kelly’s love of antique heirlooms from the past.

As a child, basket maker Karen Wychock was always drawn to things that were woven and treasured a white wicker purse she took to church each Sunday. When she discovered basketry more than 50 years ago, she found a passion that artistically combined her love of weaving and woodworking. Karen’s baskets are traditional in shape and materials: she weaves both Shaker reproductions in ash and traditional, utilitarian baskets of reed. Hardwoods such as ash and oak are used to make the rims and handles. Basket making was a hobby during her career in public education; now retired, she weaves full time.

Husband and wife artists Pamela and Bryant White create paintings that portray detailed scenes and occurrences of 18th-century America, focusing on the American Revolutionary War, the French and Indian War, as well as Eastern Woodlands Native Americans. In-depth research gleaned by reading first-person accounts, diaries, journals, and publications of the 18th century, along with studying period artifacts in museums and private collections, inspires them to capture colonial American experiences, peoples, and material culture on canvas. Both seek to create an artistic legacy that educates the public in the history of America, especially appropriate as we celebrate our country’s 250th birthday.

Blacksmith Giancarlo Sulmonte’s work consists primarily of hand-forged steel and wood. Using traditional techniques and construction methods, he creates kitchen cutlery, housewares, and architectural elements. By combining hand-finished metal and natural patina, his work has a rustic, yet refined aesthetic. When he was a child, he took a blacksmithing class from a good friend who taught him the fundamentals. From there, Giancarlo worked to build experience and knowledge through both trial and error, and his own research. Much of his blacksmithing equipment is comprised of antique tooling and machinery, most of which he has sought out and restored.

Continuing the traditions of American potters dating to 1630, Greg Shooner and Mary Spellmire-Shooner re-create authentic, museum-quality redware pottery at their Oregonia, Ohio studio. Greg and Mary use their years of pottery experience to make a ware that is unrivaled in its interpretation of rare antiques. They work alone, with a passionate commitment to quality and artistic control. A lifelong interest in art led them separately to pottery, then together to the study and making of redware. “We invest so much care into producing each piece for one reason only.....We love it! We sincerely hope you do too.”

Will Kautz began his artistic training watching his father, a fine artist, paint portraits. Will started carving when he needed tuition for law school; he had no formal training but the first time he picked up a mallet and a sculptor’s gouge he knew the profession was in his genes. For a decade Will maintained a volunteer law practice for victims of domestic violence while supporting his family with his art and today he sculpts full time. His work has been displayed at the American Folk Art Museum, the Shelburne Museum, and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation among other venues.

Feather tree artisan Donna DelCollo is a retired high school teacher who learned how to feather from Carol Wardell of Lititz, PA. Enjoying the experience so much, she now combines the making of traditional German goose feather trees with her other interests that include primitive antiques and vintage Christmas. German feather trees were handcrafted artificial Christmas trees, popular from the late 1800s, made from dyed goose feathers attached to wire branches on a wooden dowel to combat deforestation. Branches are spaced for candles and traditional decorations like glass ornaments and berries.
