Today we can see Suzanne Johnk Pierce painting the bank building on Main Street. We’re grateful she and Jerry are renovating this historic building. The Oakland Savings Bank was established in 1892 and Josh Spalti built the bank building in 1910. In 1984 the Oakland Savings Bank moved to what is now the Interstate Bank.

Lisa Rollins donated some items from her family’s collection. These teams were probably from the 1940s. These names were listed on the back of the football photo: Mike Eckert, Don Johnk, Bob Calhoun, Charles Hart, Leo Kindhart, Coach Curtis, Chuck Reed, Bud Jefferson, Jim and Chuck Shiffer, Joe Jones, Chuck While, Bunk Rollins, and Dick Bonder.

Russell Brandes asked his sister Joyce to donate this sign to the museum to commemorate a high school prank. She brought it by last week saying her brother had climbed on the roof of Pizza Hut in Council Bluffs and brought it back to Oakland. It ended up on the flagpole or roof of the school. If anyone has the full story, we’d love to hear it. We need to be accurate in our retelling of history and this is certainly part of our colorful history.

The DAR chapter met at the museum, had their meeting, and toured the exhibits. Peggy Gaul looked through a scrapbook of her daughter’s year in Mrs. Bjustrom’s first grade class. We thank this group for their generous gift for the Memorial Mural in our park.
