Thank you for the great story, Whidbey News-Times! And thank you to Sherwin-Williams in Oak Harbor and to our other mural sponsors Oak Harbor Music Festival! Our “newest” mural brings a WWII era mural—hidden in one of our buildings—back to life! Thank you to Anacortes artist Amelia Kaiser - Art for her wonderful mural recreation and to Oak Harbor artist Kat for pitching in on the mural’s article text!

This is the first of two murals celebrating the United State’s 250th anniversary—we’ll raise funds for the next WWII era mural recreation slated for October, 2026!

Amelia did an amazing job on the new mural on our walls! It’s a recreation of a WWII mural painted by Frank Griffin, a 19 year old Navy sailor, painted in 1941 at NAS Whidbey’s (WWII era) USO Club, depicting Navy planes downing N*zi planes and subs over the Puget Sound. The mural, along with other historic WWII soldier art, is hidden (and protected) within the walls of 720 SE Pioneer Way.

—While the Germans never attacked the area, the mural depicts the U.S. Navy’s fight against fascism. Proud to display this piece of history as America turns 250 years old! 💪

(A news story, reflecting the context of the mural, will be added to the mural.)

So excited!! We’re adding a new mural today at the , a recreation of a historic, WWII soldier art mural that is hidden (and protected) in one of the Allgire Project buildings, a former USO club.

As part of our 250th anniversary of the USA series, this “new” mural will show a recreation of Frank D. Griffin’s 1941 mural—showing WWII US Navy planes downing German subs & aircraft. Griffin was a contemporary of Walt Disney & the artist behind the famous “black cat” logo on Navy aircraft.

Did you see our historic murals post in November? One of the Allgire Project buildings contains some of the last known WWII era murals painting by active duty soldiers. —A historian of this art reached out and through him, we found a copy of Look Magazine from 1941, containing a color photo of one of the murals and an article about it. The building was a USO club during WWII. How cool!

See the color photo for the Look Magazine article from April 20th, 1941.
