Chasing Rainbows

I closed the gallery yesterday and could see bands of showers moving across the Island. All I could think about was rainbows. Proof that my mind has not developed much beyond the age of five. LOL. I love rainbows.

I drove all the way to South Beach hoping for one, but the clouds dried up and nothing happened. Somewhat disappointed, I headed back toward Oak Bluffs. Then I spotted this massive storm cloud in the distance with rain pouring from the sky, yet sunlight was breaking through off to the side. I quickly got the drone up over East Chop, Ocean Park, and Oak Bluffs Harbor and was treated to one of the most incredible cloud formations I’ve seen in a long time. Mother Nature is amazing.

Then I headed down to East Chop Drive and watched this otherworldly cloud formation approach the pier. Just when I thought the evening couldn’t get any better, who pulls up but my friend Tim. Johnson from the Vineyard Gazette. We spent a few minutes doing what photographers do — standing around staring at the sky and talking about clouds. He even snapped a few photos of me that I’ll share later.

For those who think everything is AI these days… don’t even start. LOL. These are real photographs of a very real evening when Mother Nature put on quite a show.

Have a great day.

Last night I headed out to East Chop and could hear the foghorn of a Steamship ferry and the deep rumble of the engines somewhere out in the fog bank off in the distance. I knew instantly where it was headed, so I sent the drone out to meet it. As the ferry slowly emerged from the fog with the sunset clouds glowing above it and dense fog hovering over the water, it was one of those magical moments. It brought me back to years ago when I was still living in Maine and trying to get my photography going. Every Friday driving into Woods Hole and getting on that ferry felt like everything changed. The stress stayed behind on the mainland, and this feeling of awe and excitement would kick in knowing I was headed to Martha’s Vineyard.

Now after living here for years, I think sometimes I take that feeling for granted. So last night watching this scene unfold, I decided I’m going to start buying a round-trip passenger ticket once in a while just to ride over to Woods Hole and right back again. No camera. No laptop. Just sitting there feeling the excitement of coming home.

Have an amazing week.

The eagle has landed… the 2027 calendars are finally here.

And honestly, holding the finished calendar in my hands never gets old. Rocket and Brodie tried their best to help with the photo shoot, although coordinating animals may actually be harder than producing the calendar itself, LOL. Kristin - could not have done it without you!!

This year’s calendar came out absolutely beautiful. The print quality is incredible, and I’m grateful to the printing company for continuing to support my fundraisers over the years by helping keep these projects affordable for the many nonprofits we’ve helped — and this year, Vineyard House, the only sober home on Martha’s Vineyard. And no… you are not allowed to cut the photos out and frame them unless you plan on paying gallery prices for each page, LOL. 😂

Thank you again to everybody who continues to support my work, the stories, and these fundraisers year after year — especially those who pre-ordered the calendar and made this project possible. But you guys really messed things up for me… now I have nearly 1,000 of these things to unpack, pack, ship, and send, LOL. 📦😄 I promise I’ll get the pre-orders out as quickly as possible, so be patient with me. The good news is they don’t even start until 2027, LOL. I will keep you updated on progress.

And now that the calendars are officially here and actually exist, you can use link below to order. And don’t procrastinate like some of you did last year… don’t complain to me when they’re all gone, LOL. 😂📅✨

Well, I did it again. I’m proud of myself. I got up at quarter to five this morning and I’m now ready to go back to bed! LOL. I had a great opening weekend at the gallery. So many people came in just to check on me and Brody. There were hugs, stories shared, and a number of people told me that some of the posts and stories over the last year meant something to them because of either their own struggles or someone they love dealing with addiction. That truly means the world to me.

I said to one person this weekend — if I had to choose between being known as a really good photographer with an art gallery, or being remembered as someone whose storytelling helped even a few people struggling with addiction, there wouldn’t even be a decision. I never imagined owning a gallery where people would walk in just to give the owner a hug. LOL. And honestly, I’m grateful for every one of those moments.

So this morning I gave thanks while watching Oak Bluffs wake up. A lone lobster boat heading out before sunrise. Amazing clouds over the bandstand at Ocean Park. Empty benches at Inkwell Beach that will soon be filled again as summer returns to the Island. I hope everyone had a meaningful Memorial Day weekend and took a few moments to remember and give thanks to those who served and sacrificed for our country.

Now we head onward into summer. And guess what? Several thousand calendars are getting dropped in my driveway tomorrow. Oh my God. Pictures to follow.

Have a great day.

I spent some time this weekend going through my website and gallery pages, and it was definitely overdue. Over the years, I had uploaded so many photos — including lots of similar scenes and images going back 8–10 years — that the site had become a little overwhelming and redundant. It felt important to simplify things a bit, clean things up, and make more room for some of my newer work and recent favorites.

So if by chance you had your eyes on a photo that suddenly seems to have disappeared… it was my fault! LOL. The good news is that I can very easily recover almost any image, so if there’s something you remember seeing in the past that you’d still like, just send me a message.

You’ll also notice a new newsletter sign-up section on the site:
https://www.blanchardphotomv.com/newsletter-sign-up

If you’ve never purchased from me before, you can sign up and receive a 15% off coupon by email to use toward your first print order and check out the updated galleries. (Calendars are excluded since those continue to help support fundraising efforts.) Here are some of the images I recently reloaded and updated on the site, along with some newer work that I hope you’ll enjoy.

Hope everyone had a meaningful and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.
