Happy Monday!

This morning I finished loading many of my recent photos to my website for those interested in purchasing prints.

The majority are in the Oak Bluffs Gallery, including Illumination Night and several other recent images. You’ll also find my latest photo of Shenandoah there, since it was taken off East Chop.

Orders placed through my website are produced by my print vendor in California, and sometimes the site can get a little complicated. If you’re simply looking for a matted print in one of my usual sizes, from 8x10 up to 20x30, I can produce those right here in the gallery.

THE SEASON IS WINDING DOWN!

A huge thank you to Mary and Joe for posing with this amazing 60-inch metal print of Menemsha. It’s one of my favorites, and it now hangs proudly in their home! This one has a black float frame around it, and it looks beautiful. I’m so grateful.

And just like that, this is my last weekend of regular gallery hours for the season. For the first time ever, I won’t be open through September and Columbus Day. For safe planning this final week, plan on me being open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I have to take Brodie to Boston on Wednesday for a procedure, and if she needs to stay overnight, Thursday could be affected as well.

I’m excited to take a little time off and head north in the RV from September 20th to October 6th. Yes, I’m even leaving in the middle of the Derby—but I still have two weeks, and that’s all I need to win the Jeep! LOL! I’m not disappearing. If you’re looking for a print, message me here or email me and I’ll do my best to meet up. There’s also a chance I may open Saturday of Columbus Day weekend, but I won’t know until we get closer.

Thanks again for an amazing season and for supporting my photography and gallery. I’m incredibly grateful!

Shenandoah’s Last Season — A Seagull’s Perspective

I flew out off East Chop two days ago to catch Shenandoah sailing majestically by.

I don’t work for Ocean Academy, but I’m trying to use my photos and videos to help Ian Ridgeway and the organization raise the money needed to preserve Shenandoah and her legacy.

63 years. 17,000 kids. That’s a legacy worth protecting.

The Five Whys

I’ve been taking pictures down this stretch of Atlantic Ave for years. They say it takes 5 whys to get to the true answer

-Why do you keep taking this picture? Because I’ve always been fascinated by a road where I can’t see the destination.
-Why does that fascinate you? Because for much of my life, not knowing what was ahead created anxiety, especially when I was drinking.
-Why the anxiety? Because I knew I was on the wrong road.
-Why did that scare you? Because I knew the destination would likely be no better than where I was. The problem wasn’t the road. It was the mess I was inside.
-So why do you still take the picture now that you're sober Because anxiety has turned into excitement. I still get that feeling in my belly, but excitement feels different from anxiety.

I’m happy I still can’t see where the road ends. Because I never want to think the journey has come to an end.

I took this photo slightly above ground level with my drone last night. An amazing sunset, an orange sky, and still no destination in sight.

Lunar Eclipses look better from Martha's Vineyard LOL!!!

For those of you smart enough to stay in bed and not wake up exhausted on a Friday morning, I have some pictures for you! LOL. God, I’m getting old. 😂

Here is a sequence of photos as the moon slowly disappeared into shadow and turned a beautiful copper color. Thousands of photographers can take pictures like these. Actually, it’s pretty easy. 😊 The high clouds came and went, with mist and humidity in the air, but I was lucky enough to get most of the shots pretty clear.

The real challenge for me is knowing when to put the camera down and just sit in awe. I couldn’t help thinking about civilizations thousands of years ago watching their moon disappear, with no idea what was happening. Sometimes you have to stop taking the picture and just feel the moment.

GOD WINKS GO BOTH WAYS

Most often, I think of coincidences, synchronicities—or as my friends Squire and Louise call them, “God winks”—as something that happens to me. But at my book signing this week, I realized I had become someone else’s God wink.

A young newlywed couple stopped at my table at Edgartown Books. As we talked, I randomly opened my book Through a Sober Lens to the story "Healing Through Connection". I wanted to show I had a coffee table book with stories. I told them about photographing the Children’s Memorial at the Edgartown Lighthouse with my drone and discovering roses left for a child who had passed. I had posted the photo, offering it to any family whose child was memorialized there. More than 20 families reached out. Incredibly, one sent me a photo of those exact roses laid that day with a photo of their child who past. What are the odds? We became lifelong friends, believing their child had somehow brought us together.

When I finished, with the story, the couple looked at me almost stunned, and told me they had lost their own child at 32 weeks. What are the odds? Another Healing Through Connection moment, for them and for me. We were both moved by this unlikely connection. We hugged before they left. I hope they are reading this. As I took this photo last night with my drone—the almost-full moon over East Chop with a sailboat passing below—I thought of you.

I wish you peace, happiness and healing as you grow together.

GALLERY ANNOUNCEMENT

Here we are on August 26th. After a slow start in May and June, July and August have been amazing. Thank you to all of you who have come to see me, Brodie and Rocket at the gallery. I hit 69 on September 21st. God help me! 😂 And as that number creeps up, time becomes the most important currency.

So, I’ve decided to close the gallery for the season for regular hours at the end of Labor Day, September 7th. I may poke my head out for a day here or there, possibly Columbus Day weekend, Thanksgiving or Christmas. We’ll see. For those who don’t know, the gallery is part of our home. I don’t pay rent, and I don’t have to pay a dog and a cat, so that makes things pretty simple! 😂

I know I’ll miss many of you who come in September, which traditionally has been one of my biggest months. But on September 8th, I’ll start getting the RV ready so Anne Marie, Brodie and I can pull off the Island and head to Lincoln, New Hampshire, then Rangeley, Lubec, Acadia and finally down to Biddeford to see my daughter. The escape artist Rocket, will stay with Amy our sitter. I’m going to miss two weeks of the Derby, but don’t let that fool you. I still intend on winning the Jeep! 😂 I’ll be there for two weeks, and that’s all I need! My son, daughter and grandkids are also coming down before the trip, so there’s a lot of life I want to make room for.

I’ve learned to take life one day at a time, and I’m just blessed and grateful that I have that option right now. One other note: I’ll be closed next Wednesday, September 2nd, taking Brodie to Boston for a CAT scan and rhinoscopy. Just to be sure some of her sinus issues aren't due to something larger. It’ll be a long day and one I’m not particularly looking forward to.

But for now, I’ve got to get back to work!
