The Leffingwell House Museum in Norwich Connecticut is one of the finest restored examples of New England. Admission- $8, 5 and under free.

Owned by the Society of the Founders of Norwich CT, whose mission is to educate the public about Norwich history through the archived collection. The Leffingwell House Historic Museum, built in 1675 by Stephen Backus for his family, and sold to Lt. Thomas Leffingwell in 1700, shows the architectural development from a two room home to a 17th-century pre-Revolutionary tavern ending as a mid-18th-c

entury townhouse. Interpreters evoke the independent spirit and lifestyle of early America with displays of artifacts dating prior to the founding of Norwich in 1659, through the 1776 Revolution and the Civil War. To illustrate the construction of a copybook we have another from our collection to use as an example. Robert Rose Beck constructed this mathematics copybook in Norwich CT, 1827. The cover was contructed with paper that was not always new but used. The pages of a copy book started with a copybook heading: a printed example of what should be copied, such as a single letter or a short proverb. The rest of the page was empty, except for horizontal rulings. The student copied the example onto the page and left blank space to complete the lesson. This copybook is part of the Leffingwell collection.

Labor Day weekend is on the horizon so Students and teachers are returning to the halls of learning. In older days, students did not have computers or text books, they learned their lessons using a copybook that they constructed themselves and used to do their lessons in specific subjects. Thanks to Lydia Blacker, we have the copybook of a young David Lillibridge of Exeter, RI in 1831, who was learning mathematics. The teacher would write the lesson on the blackboard to be copied and then completed in the copybook of the student. The student would also practice penmanship and draw designs in the margins and between sections of his lessons.

Our fragile 350 year old building an the artifacts it contains require a constant temperature for their preservation and protection. Keeping a constant temperature assists with their preservation. It's the season to Witness the Annual Return of the Infamous son of Norwich, Benedict Arnold to the Leffingwell House Museum on Saturday, September 19, 11-3pm. Learn about both sides of the infamous son of Norwich-Benedict Arnold. At 11:30 and 1:30, listen to portrayals of both 'coats' of Benedict Arnold (Dave Loda) and hear remarks about his two sides from visiting General George Washington (Gary Bliss), plus a visit from Peggy Shippen, Tory wife of Arnold. Inside the museum, view a display of Arnold memorabilia from his youth in Norwich, including his sword on loan from New London County Historical Society. Experience Living History with- Brown’s Company of Artillery & the Wedges of Time.
At 1pm, enjoy the annual delivery and presentation to Norwich Mayor of the 'heroic' leg of Benedict by Flock Theatre of New London Experience Living history at the Leffingwell, $8/pp
