Last night the Harvest Moon rises behind Lady Liberty in New York Harbor. 🌕🗽

September's full Moon appeared above the horizon with its warm, golden glow, creating one of those fleeting moments when an iconic American landmark and the night sky share the same frame.

The Moon isn't actually changing size.

From a distant viewpoint, a powerful telephoto lens compresses the enormous distance between the photographer, the Statue of Liberty and the Moon.

For a few moments, it looks almost close enough to touch.

Happy Michigan Native American Day!

In 1974, Public Act 30 established the fourth Friday in September as Michigan Indian Day.

Today, we recognize the Tribal Nations that share geography with what we now know as Michigan. These Tribal Nations are not only a part of Michigan’s history — they predate Michigan’s statehood and the United States itself. They are sovereign, contemporary Nations whose citizens, governments, languages, cultures, knowledge, and relationships continue to shape our communities today.

As we recognize Michigan Indian Day, we invite you to learn more about the Tribal Nations whose homelands we live, learn, work, and gather upon — and to carry that learning beyond today.
