Red Mullein

Red Mullein We offer a large selection of vintage haori--silk jackets- -purchased individually from Japan. Priced from $45 to $200. We also have kimono.

Red Mullein is a fine arts and crafts shop that sells handmade silk jackets and kimonos from Japan, saris from India, local fiber art, antique porcelain and wool yarn, much of it hand-dyed. Each is unique, and they are gorgeous and in wonderful condition. Although these were traditionally worn by the Japanese over kimono, they look terrific over dresses and pants. From India we have a selection o

f beautiful vintage silk saris and dupattas (shawls). Red Mullein also offers hand-dyed yarns, many from South America
We have local fiber artist Marjorie Farrell's hand-made "Frida" bags. Starting in July we will have art by local artist Char Bickel.

One of the artists who visits my shop shared the way she is using a furoshiki as a bandanna. She said, " They work great! You can see the patterns and tiny footprints at the edge! And they hold their shape nicely for a pretty silhouette."
Thanks Liz!

We have some new, large, (100cmx100cm), printed furoshiki which are quite fun--a couple indigo dyed. Photos below. These do come with directions for tying and knotting. These are cotton and washable . They make great table cloths and scarves, in addition to wrapping cloths for packages, bottles, etc.

We have hand made wool weavings, shown here displayed on an antique spinning wheel. The spinning wheel is for sale, by the way. I'm asking $125 but would take offers to a good home.

We also continue to carry vintage silk saris, which, like the Japanese silks, are incredible fiber art.
Here are some pictures of one of these which is very fancy, full of gold thread and sequins. The best thing about it is that is shimmers red.
I've tried to capture the red, but have not been particularly successful.
Hopefully you can get the idea a bit.

The silk on some of our Japanese jackets has been created using shibori techniques. Shibori is tie dying. Traditional shibori is very labor intensive. For example, every little rectangle on this piece was originally a knot tied by hand.
Shibori was often created by a team of villagers....someone designed it, someone knotted it, another person dyed it, etc.
This was often done to cloth that was already beautiful. In the example below you can see the figured design woven into the silk Shibori added both another design and a texture.
Cool, eh?
