What a beautiful Juneteenth weekend filled with community, culture, history, art, and celebration!

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make this weekend so special. A heartfelt thank you to featured artist Robert Carter for sharing his incredible talent and helping us honor the spirit and significance of Juneteenth through art.

We are deeply grateful to all of our collaborators and partners whose support made these events possible: the Town of Huntington, the Heckscher Museum, the Juneteenth Planning Committee, and the Cinema Arts Centre.

Special thanks as well to our sponsors and community supporters, including the Carll Hill Foundation, Whispering Spirit Cultural Tours, LLC, I LOVE NY, and Share Inform Enlighten, for their continued dedication to education, culture, and community engagement.

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to this country; and we also acknowledge the often-overlooked African American roots of this national day of remembrance.

In May 1865, shortly after the Civil War ended, formerly enslaved African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina gathered to properly bury Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp. They decorated the graves with flowers, sang hymns and patriotic songs, and held a powerful tribute honoring those who fought for freedom and liberation.

Historians now recognize this gathering as one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations in American history.

As we remember the fallen today, we also remember the African American communities whose acts of remembrance, dignity, and gratitude helped shape this American tradition.

May we continue to honor history fully and truthfully.
