What a Sunday!

We're still working on numbers for yesterday's opening of "Piece / Work: The Art of Mary Lou Goertzen," but it was a packed house. We heard so many stories of people whose lives were positively impacted by Mary Lou and her art. It was a very special afternoon.

"Piece / Work" is officially open through May 23, 2027 and can be visited during KM's normal business hours. We hope to see you at the museum!

Work continues on the mounting of our next special exhibit, which features the art of Mary Lou Goertzen. Line drawings/paintings and commercial art pieces are up on the walls, and other pieces, including her famous china line, are next up.

Piece/ Work: The Art of Mary Lou Goertzen opens at 1:30 pm on Sunday, August 30, 2026 and runs until May 23, 2027. You can check out the exhibit any time during KM's regular business hours.

Things are starting to take shape in the special exhibit gallery at KM! Mary Lou Goertzen's quilts are going up on the walls, thanks to preparator extraordinaire David Kreider. Next to go up are the drawings, ceramics and collages.

All this culminates on Sunday, August 30 at the grand opening of "Piece / Work: The Art of Mary Lou Goertzen." Curator Rachel Epp Buller will give a brief presentation at 3 pm.

We'll share more sneak peeks as the exhibit progresses. Stay tuned!

Over the next few weeks we'll be sharing some of the stories found in "Building Bethel: Before, Between and Beyond," curated by BC history student/KM employee Faith Peterson. The mini-exhibit is on view now in the Mantz Library lobby.

The banner is up!

We're busying staging our upcoming special exhibit, "Piece / Work: The Art of Mary Lou Goertzen." It's such a privilege to spend time in the presence of this work, and we can't wait to share it with all of you.

The exhibit opens at 3 p.m. on August 30 in the KM auditorium. Curator Rachel Epp Buller will deliver a brief presentation on the exhibit, and then you're invited to explore the new exhibit.

Sometimes a trip to the museum is a pilgrimage of sorts. Recently, Mike & Rosemary Albrecht stopped by the Kauffman Museum to see the house that Mike's great grandfather, Jacob Albrecht, lived in.

The Graber/Albrecht Cabin is the first thing a visitor sees when walking into the permanent exhibit at KM. Built in 1879 on the homestead established by Daniel John & Maria Graber in Turner County, S. Dakota, the log cabin features one room with a loft and logs from cottonwood trees. The Grabers had two boys while living in the cabin. Daniel John died in 1880. Maria continued to live with her two growing boys in the cabin until 1887 when she moved to Pretty Prairie, Ks. The cabin was sold to Jacob 'Antelope' & Anna Graber Albrecht. Five children were born and lived in the small cabin, including Mike's great grandfather.

Ultimately the cabin was preserved by Charles Kauffman and moved to Kansas in the 1940s as part of the Kauffman Museum.

A documentary about Unlocking the Past is more than enough reason to join us this Sunday, June 26 at 3 p.m. at Kauffman Museum. But if you need extra incentive, why not check out our pop-up mini-exhibit featuring books published in 1776? On loan from the Mennonite Library & Archives, the exhibit will be up through July 31, 2026.

If you happen to miss it at KM, the exhibit will return to the Mennonite Library & Archives on the Bethel College campus on August 5 and will be available for viewing there.
