The underpainting in this piece is Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun’s portrait of Marie Antoinette, painted in 1783, prior to the French Revolution. It references the traditional, but incorrectly attributed quote “Let them eat cake,” a reference to the lack of empathy from those in power.

It is overlaid with Wayne Thiebaud’s black and white lithograph of cake slices.
