The C-119 Flying Boxcar is Fairchild Aircraft's military transport plane, first developed in 1947. The wide rear clamshell doors allow for quick onloading and offloading into the generous cargo fuselage. The specimen in our collection served the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1953 to 1965 before being purchased and used as a private firefighting aircraft until it was flown to the museum in 1988 and repainted with US Air Force markings.

This Workhorse is one of the most unique looking aircraft in our collection. The Piasecki H-21, or "flying banana" is tandem rotor helicopter initially designed for arctic rescue missions. The strange shape ensures that there is no risk of the six large rotors striking the fuselage. 🚁

Sunday, August 9th, the drones take flight! Micro drones will race through twists and turns, performing midair tricks in timed trials above our indoor stage.
Watch from the ground, or catch the action in "FPV" (first person view) as the screens show live feeds from the drones' cameras. These ~3" wide quad copters are small but mighty, presented by Sacramento MultiGP drone pilots.
Root for your favorite racer from 11am-3pm

The Aerospace Museum of California was proud to participate in the Artemis II celebration at Red Rocks! 🚀🌙

The STEM Fair welcomed 8,500 attendees for a day filled with hands-on discovery and meaningful STEM engagement. A highlight was hearing inspiring remarks from Artemis II crew members Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.

Thank you to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Lockheed Martin , Northrop Grumman Corporation, and Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre for creating an unforgettable experience and inspiring the next generation of explorers!

Special thanks to our new Aircraft Preservation Team, who have started work on the Lockheed EC-121’s lower radome. Look forward to a restored underbelly, and give them props if you see them hard at work!

Radome is a portmanteau of radar + dome, referring to the bulbous shapes on the top and bottom of the EC-121's fuselage. Lockheed's long range radar plane began production in 1943 and stayed in service until the 1970s.

Plan your visit to see the EC-121 and many more full aircrafts in our air park! ✈️

The A-10 Thunderbolt is a "low and slow" military flyer with many built-in protections from the ground munitions that it's likely to encounter. A titanium-enforced cockpit shields the pilot while a backup manual control system allows continued flight in case of damaged hydraulics.

This Warthog entered the museum's collection in 1991 after surviving a ground-to-air missile attack, manually flown by Major Jim Rose back to base. Plan your visit to see our entire collection of historic aircrafts!

The HU-16E Albatross has served as an amphibious search and rescue aircraft since 1947, serving the Air Force, Coast Guard, and Navy. This specimen joined our collection in 1988, and was restored by Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento. Note the keel-shaped bottom and pontoons that allow for water landings in remote areas.
